I am a Local Guide because

I could have said, I Want to Describe myself in 3 Words. Instead, I started with the phrase,

I am a Local Guide because…

The 3 words that I’ll now use will make you, the reader see why I am a Local Guide.

For me, a Local Guide was someone whose main job was being a local historian with some ultra-alternative time to work another job and later go on to give a talk on Micropaleontology, the study of fossils under the microscope, at the Natural History Museum, or on cancellation, the inimitable and illustrative University of London.

Until I started reviewing in July 2018, I didn’t know what a Local Guide did but I knew I could get my nature conservation ideas across to more readers. That was all I thought I could do as a Local Guide.

Now that I have been a Local Guide for nearly a year and joined the Local Guides Connect forum at the time, I have used the ‘3 words to describe me’ concept repeatedly.

The ‘3 words to describe me’ concept:

Sporty, Adventurous and Competitive

My Sporty ‘outfit’ was ‘tailored’ during my pre-Prep Boarding school days when I was also cutting out fashion-wear clothing to put on a cut-out doll shape and playing with my next door neighbour’s children, who had a Wendy house which we just played around but never inside. I gradually came away ‘wearing’ an outfit for liking sports that challenged me to ‘go on stage’. On the outside, sports and being on stage, for whatever reason, do not appear to be a likely combination but when you see sports personalities playing on the field and seeing them again donning a Sports Personality of the Year Award title, you know the ‘sports kit’ has always got to be prepared for those days.

I now do a Mini-Marathon run and follow a few football teams, including Spurs and I went to their stadium today. Brilliant! Go-Getters! On par! My match, is at the forefront of my mind at the minute and which I am still practicing for in the outdoors, breathing in the ‘healthy’ London air whilst reeling in the pain of kicking a football!

As a Local Guide, keeping fit is a vital requisite! I can’t chow down all the good food I eat whilst reviewing and not put on weight mainly around my waistline. Uhm. It ain’t fair is ‘wot’ I say!

This is where my 3rd attribute comes in play: The competitive streak. When you’ve gained some weight in a few days and can’t get rid of it, you develop a fighting streak. ‘I NEED to go to the GYM!!’ I NEED to go to the GYM!!’ ‘I NEED to go to the GYM!!’ has become my daily mantra.

My 2nd attribute: Adventurous

In my ‘out and about’ mode, come rain or shine, I am out there when I can, tasting the newest dishes, one platter at a time. I don’t mind sifting through the list of newly opened cafes or eateries but the food has to be what I would eat if I wasn’t a Local Guide. In that sense I am not the daring type who’d eat their way through innards, tripes, jellied eels, fish eye balls or snails but I can eat a vegetarian breakfast, as I did today, though not an exotic ‘nouveau cuisine’ menu conversation-stopper like farm-reared rabbit with woodland and wild mushrooms, cooked in foie gras immersed in pecan oil or some unusual sounding vegetables or rarity I can’t pronounce correctly, or a recently discovered exotic vegetable braised and served with grilled guinea fowl.

You may think I would eat guinea fowl if I was famished to starving but I have got up in the past without eating breakfast before work and I can safely say I never craved for guinea fowl nor fish eyeballs.

It would also be highly unlikely for me to be stranded on a desert but in the very likely case of a food shortage during the transition period of 2020 in Britain, I know I could survive on toast and peanut butter or marmite, if we ran out of peanut butter.

I would like to know what 3 attributes best describe you, so I have suggested the idea that we have a Lifestyle tab in addition to the tabs we currently have on the Local Guides Connect forum:

Lifestyle tab to allow Local Guides to describe themselves and what motivates them

Superb @HoangDang

It is truly the best challenge on LG Connect!

I learnt that by participating I have to write the way I usually write.

The other is, I don’t now see LG Connect as just getting updates and info but that there is a fundamental matter that needs to be looked into and that is:

We need to know what makes an LG motivated to do reviews. What makes them tick?
