Hyderabad Zoo - A Unique Train Ride to Enjoy the Flora & Fauna

This is the best zoo after Mysuru but better than those in Chennai, Pune, and Delhi. A distinguishing factor is its huge size with a central pond with lots of sea animals.

Another unique feature of the Hyderabad Zoo named as the Nehru Zoological Park is the train ride that takes you around the various animal shelters to save walking over a vastly spread out place. There are also battery-operated coaches but they are too slow and stop often as they share the space with pedestrians. Alternatively, you can opt to bicycle around the zoo at leisure.

From birds to turtles to monkeys, the zoo has all the animals. Besides this, there are tigers, leopards, jaguars, bears, lions, and also grass-eating animals like different types of deer, elephant, zebra, giraffe. Several types of birds, macaws, ostrich, pelican, and the latest addition is a kangaroo. There is also a marine enclosure with fishes, turtles as well as a reptile enclosure within the zoo.

In spite of being one of the largest zoological parks of India, the animal enclosures are very well maintained. You can find stalls offering food and refreshments though the car parking is arranged outside. This is a good place to visit with children since ample drinking water and washroom amenities are available.

The lovely ambiance of the varied flora and fauna along with the great collection of animals makes this a perfect hangout with friends and family for about half a day on your trip to Hyderabad.

I first visited the Zoo and other places in Hyd in 1987 as a school trip, then again 20 years later in 2007 with my parents and kids and 13 after that last trip I still missing Hyd badly - I just want to be there.

I too visited the zoo on a school trip in 1987, then again 20 years later in 2007 with my parents and kids, and now 13 yrs after that last trip I still missing Hyd badly; will go there at the first opportunity.

Do you have direct flights from KSA to Hyd? What is the flight duration like?

Iam currently living in Al-Khobar city and the closest International airport is KFIA. We used to have a direct flight from Dammam-Hyderabad (Duration: 4 Hours) operated by Saudi Airlines and SpiceJet before the lock-down @TusharSuradkar If you are planning to visit Hyderabad again, I would highly recommend you to visit these following places:

1. Ram ki Bandi - Best known for new varieties of Dosa, You will love reading this post on the story behind this budding entrepreneur.
2. Hameedi Confectioners- You should definitely try the special Jouzi Halwa (Dessert) from this shop. This is a very old famous shop located on a busy road. This shop used to prepare the dessert for the last Nizam of Hyderabad.
3. Famous Ice Cream: This is a heaven for Ice cream lovers, you will love the ancient structures which are made of granite and has white domes.

I recently come to know that KSA is not all deserts and sand-dunes, there are green patches as well
