Humayun's Tomb (New Delhi)

Humayun’s Tomb is a historic place of Indian history and has a significant contribution to Indo-Islamic architecture. This is basically the tomb of Humayun (second Mughal emperor), which was built by Hamida Banu Begum (wife of Humayun).

Here are some of the interesting facts about this place:

1. It is the earliest example of Persian influence in Indian architecture.

2. It is said that this place has about 100 graves, earning it the name “Dormitory of the Mughals”.

3. It is the first place to use white marble and red sandstone in huge numbers.

4. There are some small canopies at the top, which are made up of blue tiles and brass finishing.

I strongly recommend everyone to visit this place if you are in New Delhi. I was really surprised to see this tomb and would love to visit again.

Tourism Ministry of India has now started night lighting too here. I’ve never seen it, but heard that it is awesome.

Thanks for sharing your post. The architecture of the building is quite impressive! Are there lots of people visiting the Tomb? Is it a free entrance? How is the easiest to get there? Was this your first visit?

Thanks for the appreciation. Yes, it was my first visit and I was too impressed by its architecture.

Tourism department spends a lot on its maintenance and to provide convenience to tourists. For this purpose, a nominal fee is charged to visit this monument. Sorry, I don’t remember the exact amount.

Many domestic and international tourists come here. In fact, it is in Top 5 places for any tourist visiting New Delhi. The easiest way to reach here is by cab or by Metro. Nearest metro station is Hazrat Nizamuddin Metro Station on Pink Line of Delhi Metro.

Tourism department also runs a bus for sightseeing, which is called “HoHo Bus”. It covers around 25-30 places, including this monument.

It is my first time hearing about the sandstone as an architecture component, should that result in the great Tomb of Emperor Humayun. : ]
