Humayun's Tomb Museum : India's first 'Sunken Museum'

Hi Fellow LGs,

I recently visited Humayun’s Tomb Museum which has the distinction of being India’s first ‘Sunken Museum’

Features :

  • More than 500 artifacts on display, many of them for the first time
  • It is inspired by the traditional Baolis or stepwells, hence it is named as Sunken Museum
  • It has 2D and 3D interactive exhibits
  • It showcases insights on the life of the Mughal empire, especially that of Humayun.
  • It also showcases the rich heritage of Nizamuddin area, where revered Sufi Saint Nizamuddin Auliya and many important people from the Mughal Era are entombed

History :

  • It is developed by the Aga Khan Trust in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India
  • It took almost 10 years to build, and it is a product of 25 years of conservation efforts across the Humayun’s tomb complex

Names of galleries inside the museum :

  • Where the Emperor rests : Highlights the architectural splendor of Humayun’s Tomb
  • Icons of a Sacred Landscape : It has insights on Historical figures like Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, Rahim, Amir Khusrau, Dara Shikoh and many others
  • Immersive 270 degree digital screen which shows us the virtual tour of the World Heritage Site

One of the highlights of the exhibition is a 18 foot high golden finial of the Humayun’s Tomb, which was initially places at the top of the dome, but was knocked off due to a storm in 2014. It now stands as a centerpiece of the museum, restored by conservation experts.
