Hamida Banu Begum, his grieving widow, built Emperor Humayun’s mausoleum. Precursor to the Taj Mahal, it stands on a platform of 12000m and reaches a height of 47m. The earliest example of Persian influence in Indian architecture, the tomb has within it over 100 graves, earning it the name, ‘Dormitory of the Mughals’. Built of rubble masonry, the structure is the first to use red sandstone and white marble in such great quantities. The small canopies on the terrace were originally covered in glazed blue tiles, and the brass finial over the white marble domes is itself 6 m high.

Humayun’s Tomb : The tomb stands on a raised platform, with a central dome that is 42 meters high. The dome is made of white marble and is surrounded by smaller domes and chhatris, which are decorative elements that are commonly found in Mughal architecture. The tomb is built of red sandstone, with inlaid white marble and black slate.
The structure is square-shaped and has four main entrances, each facing one of the cardinal directions. The corners of the building are adorned with octagonal towers, which are topped by domed kiosks. The tomb is surrounded by a large garden, which is divided into four parts by causeways and water channels. The garden is designed in the charbagh style, which is a Persian-inspired garden layout that features four quadrants.
Humayun’s Tomb is not only an architectural masterpiece, but it is also an important historical monument. It served as a model for the Taj Mahal, which was built several decades later.
