Humanyu's Tomb, New Delhi, India

This World Heritage site is located close to the Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station and easily it can be accessed by the public transport or Cab.
Built in 1560 AD to 1571 AD, this tomb is the first monument based on its distinctive architecture and Charbagh. Before the Taj Mahal, this tomb was a symbol of grandeur in the Mughal dynasty. This huge complex includes several gardens and tombs. This unique building was built by Hamida Begum, the widow of Humayun, and under the patronage of his son Emperor Akbar. This unique tomb was built by skilled artisans from Iran and India. Architects were Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son his son Sayyed Mohammad Ghiyas who could layout a dream on the land.

Water flows through channels in the Charbagh which are connected to the octagonal / square Tank. There are grand entrances in the west and south for entry. The tomb stands on a high, stepped platform, surrounded by domed cells. There are white marble’s double domes with high brass finials on either side of which are pillared kiosks and the domes of the canopies were decorated with glazed ceramic tiles. There is a series of arches around the platform, beyond which there are many smaller arches. It has grand Ivans with pointed arches and a lot of architectural features which I just can’t describe. This structure is made of red sandstone, on which white and black marble borders are applied. It was the first Tomb in Islamic history to be built on this Char Bagh pattern with the extensive use of white marble and this magnificent and majestic edifice was the precursor of Taj Mahal.

Humayun’s Garden Tomb is also known as the “Dormitory of the Mughals” as more than 150 members of the Mughal family are buried here.

This is one of the important site of Archaeological Survey of India. Its maintenance is carried out with the ancient techniques and materials. This is the World Heritage Site which was visited by the USA president Barak Hussain Obama.
