How to write Helpful Reviews - part 2

Hello Local Guides

Here are some handy ways to contribute better reviews on maps which helped me to make my reviews more helpful. You can refer this post for part 1 (tips for helpful Reviews)

  1. Focus on details - it is very Important to add details which could be helpful for others,

While writing, always ask yourself what things would you like to know when reading a review about a place and start adding the details.

  1. Add icon - Earlier I used to write reviews in Paragraph form which made it look too much to write, so I started adding - signs or * signs to make it look more better.

Adding icons for accessibility, parking space and washroom wherever applicable.

Icons grab the attention quickly.

  1. Adding pointers - to keep the reviews more precise, adding pointers like ambience, service, food, attributes makes it easy to be more descriptive and helps to share better information about the place.

  1. Honesty and Politeness - this is the most important part towards review, many times we might have a bitter experience and we tend to write bad about it, it is important to be mindful when it comes to sharing something negative.

Always communicate with the owner / staff.

Try to talk and resolve the problem.

If you are still not happy you can mention it in your reviews in a polite way, without using bad language.

Being Honest about reviews is very important, because many people depend on the contribution of local guides like us.

Some businesses also offer Free products/ food, but we should not let that impact our actual experience.

  1. Attributes - attributes are important and also help in search as they act as keywords,

For instance if you write about accessibility in your reviews, a person searching for accessible places will find the place you wrote a review about.

This also helps to know what all facilities are available at the place especially after the pandemic people are more cautious about health and hygiene, digital payments and safe places to go.

  1. Add name of Dishes and your experience - this is helpful when you have visited a place multiple times or tried different food.

You can mention the name of Dishes and describe the taste and experience.

This helps people to discover new dishes.

  1. Add Helpful Images - reviews added with Images Show up on Explore tab, which makes your reviews visible locally in the area.

This helps people to find about the business and also see your contributions.

  1. Edit / update - Things around us are constantly changing and businesses have been updating based on safety rules and regulations.

Even If you have written a review and feel there is a need to add some new information or add new detail you can go back and make edits.

There are 2 ways to do so.

  • In case the old review no longer seems to helpful you can edit the whole review and write a new one
  • In case if there a new information like availability of delivery or takeaway service, Close for dine in, improvement in accessibility, you can mention it in addition to your original review.

Did you find these tips helpful? Are there any more things which you do to make your reviews helpful? share them in the comments below :slightly_smiling_face:

Brilliant, @FalguniP .

I’m a big fan of politeness also. Better sleep on it before posting a negative review.

If I may add one more tip:

Don’t make your reviews too long. Very few people read more than the the first 1-2 lines, so it is best to always put forward your most important points at the very top.

Long reviews are also more prone to trigger the spam filter and get hidden.

All the best

@MortenCopenhagen absolutely

At times if the place is big and there is too much to write, I tend to write a lengthy one too :grimacing:

So I keep trying to make it specific with the pointers and hopefully I can find some better ways too

Thanks for the suggestion, you are amazing!

Also the Polietness fact is very important because I always come across people mentioning negative reviews and unrelated reviews which at times.

Wow!! Great post, @FalguniP , I really like your indication and what added by @MortenCopenhagen , well done, and extremely helpful for the local guides who wants to improve their reviews.

I’m also a big fun of editing the review when it is necessary, to make it actual, and to reflect the changes in the businesses.

The troubleshooter that is in my wants only to add one more point.

Many find helpful to use a pattern for the reviews. It is fine if you keep it “open”, e.g. describe in sequence ambiance, food, service, accessibilities, etc., because it helps to remember what to write, but it is a big no if it becomes a dotted list:

  • Ambiance 3,5
  • Food 4
  • Service 5
  • Price 3

I’ve seen some Local Guide doing this, trying to be impartial, but missing the most important aspect: our personal experience.

In addition that kind of lists are frequently triggering the spam filter

@ErmesT thank you :blush:

I constantly work on new ways to improve and love to share the same with fellow local guides.

In my few recent reviews I start with a single line description and then move to each part seperately so it’s easy to cover all the details.

Also if the place is big or the dishes I tried are more in add them which can help others.

Just to add one last question Is it fine to add the pointers? Or keep it just the paragraph form?

In my opinion, @FalguniP , everything can improve the readability of a review is perfect for me, so I am perfectly fine with inserting dots. The meaning of what I said is that after the dots, you should add a free text, more than a series of standard texts, repeated in every review
