As much as I enjoy using my e-reader, there’s something so wonderful about having a real book in your hands. I love heading to local bookstores and discovering new titles. Perhaps more than that, it brings me pure joy to chat with local bookstore owners and their friendly staff about the books they loved reading. (Also, the smell of a bookstore might just be my favorite smell of all.)
The reviews you share on Google Maps can help others find their way to their next great read. Here are some tips for writing bookstore reviews that help guide fellow bibliophiles.
Be descriptive about the offerings
What kind of books can you find there? Is there a wide variety? How about a great children’s section? Can you find both new and used books? Some bookstores have display tables or shelves filled with recommended titles or highlight books written by local others. Others may share handwritten reviews from staff. These details can help people choose where to go to find their next read.
Don’t forget to mention all the other products
Many bookstores sell a lot more than just books. They can be great places to find records, games, cards, stationary, accessories, and other fun goodies. I personally love to get souvenirs from local bookshops whenever I visit a new place such as a tote bag or coaster with the city’s name on it.
Paint a picture of the ambiance
Imagine you’re an author describing the place in a book. Tell readers about the layout, decor, and music. The more detail, the better.
Add details about any food and beverage offerings
I’ve been to many bookstores that double as a cafe where you can sit and start to devour your new book alongside a great cup of coffee. If you visit one of these bookstores, be sure to mention the cafe part in your review including the menu, prices, and your thoughts on anything you tried.
Include info about the staff, seating, and events
Friendly, approachable staff can make a world of a difference for any business, so be sure to mention them in your reviews. Somewhere to sit while you consider a potential purchase can be equally as helpful, so let others know whether there’s chairs or couches around the store. Lastly, many bookstores host events such as readings with authors, Q&As, or storytime for kids. Include details about this in your reviews, too.
