As a new dog parent, I love it when I find pet-friendly places to bring my pup, Frankie. One way pet owners know where they can bring their pets is from Local Guides like you who share info about pet-friendly spots on Google Maps.
To continue our #LetsGuide celebration of all the things that inspire you to share your local knowledge, here are my tips for capturing great photos that help people looking for pet-friendly spots know where to go.
Tip 1: Relax and get friendly
Animals can be sensitive to abrupt movement and even our emotions, so you’ll need to be relaxed in order to make them feel comfortable in front of the camera. It’s also important to be patient, as animals often won’t do exactly what we’d like them to do when we are trying to capture a photo.
Tip 2: Find the best natural light and avoid using a flash
When indoors, try to find a spot where there is soft natural light, like near a window. Avoid using your camera’s flash whenever possible when photographing animals as the flash can startle them and create harsh shadows and red-eye.
Tip 3: Capture the pet-friendly clues
Think of what’s important to a pet owner when visiting a place. Clues to look out for include free waste disposal bags, water bowls, and free dog treats.
Tip 4: Include the hours of operation
Some parks are only open to dogs during morning hours. Try to capture a sign that shows the hours of operation and any other rules, and include your pet in the scene to make the photo more interesting.
Tip 5: Show as much as you can
Try to capture as much of the space as possible in one photo and include people interacting with their pets. Doing this will show pet owners what a place is really like.
Tip 6: Get a dog’s-eye view of the world
For a fun angle, get low and capture what your pet sees! You’ll be surprised at a whole new perspective. Make sure to clear distracting background elements in the frame if you can, so the pet stands out.
Tip 7: Capture the moment
Animals can be unpredictable at times, so it’s good to have your camera ready when you’re at a pet-friendly place. Be ready to snap away before the cat or dog jumps out of the frame!
