One thing New York City is well known for is its shopping. There are all the department, flagship, pop-up, experiential, and sample sale stores you could dream of. New York’s abundance of new release products, and cutting-edge experience-focused spaces makes it the go-to location for next-level shopping.
The most outspoken figures in fashion with the newest fashion news tend to be fashion editors, maybe buyers, but almost never fashion designers. Why is that? I wondered this for a long time. And, as a fashion designer myself, decided it was time to speak out about the industry I have worked in for over a decade. I approach fashion topics from a designer’s point of view. Fashion designers are vastly under-represented in fashion media. I’m here to give us a voice.
Is a designer’s perspective of the industry really that different from a fashion editor’s perspective? Yes, I believe it is.
Fashion editors tend to focus on the now.The end products and the consumers. What’s about to be released and where to find it.
Fashion designers tend to focus on the future. From trends to creative conceptualization and development of new products. We’re designing collections to be presented six months to one year in advance. We live in a very different world from editors, buyers, and stylists.
As a fashion designer, my criteria for judging retail experiences includes:
- Brand curation (for multi-brand or department stores)
- Store Organization (where’s what and why)
- Prices (mark-ups in fashion are sometimes out of control)
- Product Quality (including fabric hand-feel, durability, seam finish quality, shape/cut quality)
- Customer Service
- Overall space vibes
- Known history of the store or brand relative to its current situation
- Personal style and fashion preferences
- Fashion Designer knowledge of garments and the industry
