How to make great restaurant lists on Google Maps

As Local Guides, you know where to find the best of everything in your city. Now, there’s an easy way to share your favorite places to eat with the world: create lists on Google Maps.

We want to showcase your amazing lists, so, starting now, we’re going to issue a weekly challenge. Here’s the first: Make a list that tells people where to find the best things to eat and drink in your city.

Use our tips below, set your list’s sharing options to Public, then add a link to your creation in the comments. We’ll share some of our favorite lists on the official Local Guides social channels.

Want some inspiration to get started? Here are three tips for making great food and drink lists on Google Maps:

1. Choose a theme. It could be a certain type of restaurant (like ramen shops), or even a single type of food (like churros). Or, you can create a tour of places that any food lover should visit in your city.

2. Write a fun title and description. Your list’s name should tell people exactly what they’ll find in it, like 9 incredible bakeries in Buenos Aires, or The best filter coffee in Delhi.

In the description, add #LocalGuides and a sentence or two about why your city is a great place for that specific type of food or drink. For example: If you love biryani, you’ve got to visit Hyderabad. Here are the best places to try when you do.

(By the way, if you do love biryani, be sure to check out the video from our Hyderabad meet-up.)

3. Add comments to each place****. The last step is to personalize your list by adding comments, a new feature now on Android (and coming soon on iOS and Desktop). It’s your chance to make your list extra-special and helpful to anyone who finds it on Google Maps. Here are a few ideas:

  • Made a list of your city’s best pizzerias? Say whether each spot specializes in thin crust, thick crust, or another pizza style.
  • On a list of cocktail bars, suggest a drink to order at each one.
  • If you’re sharing your favorite outdoor markets, call out the best time to visit and mention the must-try vendors.

In the spirit of National Thesaurus Day (today!), here’s a bonus tip: Take a moment to find just the right words for your comments. Don’t settle for “delicious” when you can be specific and say a dish is spicy, cheesy, or buttery.

How are lists being graded? Is there some sort of point system for creating lists?

Very nice feature. It allows us to link our meet up videos too. I liked it so much. @OSAMA have a look at this feature. You may love it too.

Hello @LawrenceNYC

I just added two revised food reviews. Will you be so kind as to critique them? So that I know if this is what you are looking for…

Hope all is well by you

BTW :blue_heart: THE HTML options :heavy_check_mark:

My List thus far:

BTW, it would be nice if we could edit the Lists’ Titles as well as the Descriptions. I for one work in increments. It is like creating an outline on the fly, then developing the details and allowing inspiration to take hold.

This is a great way to avoid “writers block” and allowing inspiration to evolve

If the Shared Lists feature allows collaborators to add places also, then all Local Guides in the region can edit the same list together.

Hi @YK1001 how does that work?

Editing the same list together?

THE STEP BY STEP IS VERY WELL EXPLAINED.

@kempski

You simply fire-up Maps => tap on the Sandwich menu on the upper left of your screen =>> Your Places =>>> browse around… it is intuitive, you will decipher the rest.

Please Note that if you use one of the pre-existing “Saved” you will not be able to fine tune your Theme. Hence, I recommend creating your Themes from scratch so that you will be able to edit and tweak your Themes as your inspiration surfaces with experience.

I hope this helps  Feel free to shoot questions, if need be.

“The only stupid questions are the ones not asked.”
