How To Make a restaurant reservation in Google Maps

Hello Local Guides family,

Following tips are from Google Maps Help in case you are not aware of it. Wouldn’t it be great to have this feature for the rest of the world?

Use the Google Maps app to make restaurant reservations in the United States through OpenTable, an online reservation site.

Make a reservation

  1. Open the Google Maps app Google Maps.

  2. Search for a restaurant or tap a restaurant on the map.

  3. To see more information, tap the name of the restaurant. If the restaurant uses OpenTable, you’ll see a “Find a table” section with open time slots.

  4. To look for openings at different times and party sizes, update the reservation time and party size.

Note: If your Google email is registered with OpenTable, you’ll also get Dining Rewards points for your reservation.

Confirm your reservation
You’ll see a page that confirms your reservation. You’ll get a confirmation email from OpenTable shortly afterwards.

Change or cancel your reservation
To change or cancel your reservation, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the confirmation email from OpenTable.

  2. Tap Change or Cancel.

Troubleshoot problem

I see the error “This didn’t go through”
You’ll see this error if Google couldn’t connect to OpenTable to confirm your reservation.

I own a restaurant and I don’t see “Find a table” in Google Maps

To have a “Find a table” section, your restaurant needs to be part of the OpenTable Network and located in the United States.

If your restaurant is a part of the OpenTable Network, but isn’t showing up, contact OpenTable.

Information that’s shared when you create a reservation

OpenTable requires your name, a phone number, and email address to confirm a reservation. To learn how they use and protect this information, check out their Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

Partner with Google on restaurant reservations
Google currently offers restaurant reservation integrations on Maps with OpenTable. If you manage an online reservation service and would like to partner with Google, fill out this form.

Note: While Google isn’t actively seeking partners, Google might consider new partners in the future.

@Badruddeen Do you have any idea how it works for the other end at the restaurant side? How do they update the information for last minute reservations on wait times so the customer does not get there and find a long delay. Do they post or update hourly?

Hi @Badruddeen ,

I heard about this Booking a table is coming for quite some time. At last, it arrived.

Do you have some POIs that already have this feature linked? I want to click and see how it looks like.

@RonneBD Based on what @Badruddeen indicated it is only in the United States right now. On the open table about us page, they are worldwide so there is hope for it being expanded based on how this works out. they have 40,000 restaurants so makes a big point of entry to the market.

Hi @YK1001 @davidcox @RonneBD

Search on Maps “VILLARD Madison Avenue” and you can see it. Please let us know what you think of it. The menu feature is interesting.

Cheers

Got it, @Badruddeen .

So it is a URL to an external Booking for Table website. Once reached the Booking for Table site, it is not related to Maps anymore.

Hi @RonneBD

Read the post and you will find the answers there.

Thanks

Hi @davidcox

David, interesting question. I believe the property PMS is connected to Opentable reservation system. So availability would be based on real-time and there won’t be any waiting time for customers.

Thanks

@Badruddeen Thanks, I will be letting local restaurants know. Great photos inside. Looks like a really upscale place.

Dear @davidcox You are welcome,

Indeed it’s an upscale place. Following is a bit of information about this place by the hotel “Lotte New York Palace” Stay on location at Lotte New York Palace, host to some of the silver screen’s most iconic filming locations in NYC. The hotel’s historic Villard Houses, beautiful dining venues and elegant rooms have made the hotel a favorite among filming locations in NYC for a variety of TV shows and movies in recent years. Oprah Winfrey and the crew from Oprah’s Next Chapter recently filmed the ‘Power Preformances’ episode in our one-of-a-kind Jewel Suite by Martin Katz.
