How to improve a satellite view of an area?

Wait a minute, just have a look at these two photos!

This is a photo of an area which I think it hasn’t been updated in my opinion. With a satellite view and this photo below is the photo of another area.

For your information these two photos are from two different countries.

I’m wondering why these two photos are really different, what I mean is the first photo above is the buildings and the area is mostly not clear and kind of blurred while the second photo is more clearer and the buildings are easily recognizable.

My question is here, why there is this difference?

Is there any way that a local guide can explain this to me, please?

And is there a way for us as a local guide to do concerning this?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi @Hawki ,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! : ]

Regarding your inquiry, it would be best advised to send feedback on the matter on Google Maps.

Please keep in mind that the Idea exchange category would mainly be utilized on Connect for Local Guides to share their feedback and ideas with our team to tell us about a way to improve the Local Guides program. (to learn more about the Idea Exchange, you can read the article How do I use the Idea Exchange?)

Follow up to that, the current post would be relocated to How-tos, should the subject be more suited in the board.

It’s an old link but I feel it still gives some useful insight into Google satellite images and how they acquire them.

Essentially the images don’t all come from the same source or even from the same sort of tech, as a result quality varies and you might even find that an older image of a place is actually better quality than a more recent one in some cases.

Ultimately it’s unlikely you’re going to be able to have much influence on the quality of a specific area unless you own aerial imaging equipment of a satellite of your own that you’re willing to use and then pass down photos to Google for free :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @Hawki

In some countries, the authorities have asked Google Maps not to show high-resolution images from planes and satellites because they think it will prevent terrorists from planning attacks.

So it might be worth looking into by reaching out to local authorities and map-responsible authorities and researchers to learn if something can be done to influence the relevant decision-makers to allow better areal photos to be used on Google maps.

In my experience, it is really valuable for maps users to have super res images.

If you look at where Google makes Streetview images available on Maps you will find that Germany is an oddly blind spot between neighboring countries. That is also a political decision to protect privacy over making life easier for Maps users.

I don’t know what is best, but it is certainly worth discussing.

Cheers
