How To Greet Medanese People

Medan Have More Than HORAS

By, Cahyo Pramono

If I may describe the culture of Medan, i think it is like a miniature of Indonesia. This Town is the house for multi ethnic living for years before the independence of Republic of Indonesia.

Most Indonesian thought Medan is only Batak, but actually we have more; Melayu as the native ethnic, then followed by people from surrounded like Karo, Batak Toba, Batak Simalungun, Pakpak (dairi), Nias, Mandailing, Angkola.

Wait, the biggest population here is Java. You will also find easily find Chinese and Indian. Because of the Development now, Medan is the house for all people’s of Indonesai, from Aceh till Papua.

You will easily recognize each Ethnic since we mostly speak in our own ethnical language. People from Karo will speak Karo to their fellows, Nias speak Nias, Mandailing Speak Mandailing. Don’t be surprise when you find somebody speak Java, Hokien, even Arabic.

We speak with our own language since all the ethnic immigrate in a big group during the colonialism in the history. So we keep not only the language but also our culture.

But when communicate with others, Bahasa Indonesia is our only means.

It’s become common when official speech started with many greeting, one to another; HORAS (most batak), MEJUAH-JUAH (Karo), NJUAH-JUAH (Dairi), AHOY (Malayu), YAAHOWU (Nias) etc.

Hello @cahyopramono ,

Thank you for sharing this information about the culture of Medan, I was born in Medan and this must be interesting for other Local Guides to read about our culture. Are you currently living in Medan?

Just as additional tips, in the future it will be best to use your own picture when posting on Connect.

Maybe you don’t know about this, but currently here on Connect we are very strict about plagiarism in both photos and writings. We urge our fellow Local Guides to write they’re own content because we value originality.

I recommend you to read this article about original content guidelines on Connect for more information regarding this topic.

I would also let you know that I will change your topic label to the Local Stories topic.
