How To Great Medanese

Medan Have More Than HORAS

By, Cahyo Pramono

If I may describe the culture of Medan, i think it is like a miniature of Indonesia. This Town is the house for multi ethnic living for years before the independence of Republic of Indonesia.

Most Indonesian thought Medan is only Batak, but actually we have more; Melayu as the native ethnic, then followed by people from surrounded like Karo, Batak Toba, Batak Simalungun, Pakpak (dairi), Nias, Mandailing, Angkola.

Wait, the biggest population here is Java. You will also find easily find Chinese and Indian. Because of the Development now, Medan is the house for all people’s of Indonesai, from Aceh till Papua.

You will easily recognize each Ethnic since we mostly speak in our own ethnical language. People from Karo will speak Karo to their fellows, Nias speak Nias, Mandailing Speak Mandailing. Don’t be surprise when you find somebody speak Java, Hokien, even Arabic.

We speak with our own language since all the ethnic immigrate in a big group during the colonialism in the history. So we keep not only the language but also our culture.

But when communicate with others, Bahasa Indonesia is our only means.

It’s become common when official speech started with many greeting, one to another; HORAS (most batak), MEJUAH-JUAH (Karo), NJUAH-JUAH (Dairi), AHOY (Malayu), YAAHOWU (Nias) etc.

@FXBudiW , @beno93 , @Lucii , @DosmariaValensia incase you have to make a speech in front of mendanese…

Great.
