This is a very good question that deserves a good answer as well.
The local guide program is a voluntary service and the aim is to help small businesses,big businesses,other maps users and even ourselves as maps users. We should be helping to improve the maps at no cost. It’s supposed to be a selfless service and we shouldn’t be looking for recognition either because the services we render and the contributions we make is very priceless.
The fact that the contributions are helping others is a satisfaction on It’s own. Although Google does offers some little token of perks randomly to some local guides but that’s not guaranteed.It’s very limited so don’t rely or expect that. If your actively contribute so much an make a good impact,you could even be recognised as a guiding star like in this article Guiding-Stars-is-coming-December-7 . I see @SholaIB gave you a great answer already, and I would like to add a note: do you think that your review will be “honest and not influenced by the business” if they will offer a discount in exchange for your review?
This is also strictly forbidden for the business, and they can have their listings removed from Maps if offering a compensation in excellent for a review.
We should be free to write our review even if negative, to help the business to improve
