@Vickytham there is no fixed process or procedure, the 50 Guiding Stars are handpicked by the Google team. Some things which can be taken into account are:

  • your contributions on Google Maps (ideally there should be a lot and they should be of high quality)
  • your contributions on Connect (ideally there should be a lot and they should be helpful for other local guides)
  • the fact that you stand out of the crowd by introducing initiatives that will inspire other local guides (I firmly believe that the fact that I was selected to be a guiding star last year is linked to the fact that I started the Local Guides Clean The Map (LGCTM) project and that I host a dedicated podcast)

What does not really play a role is your local guides level: as you will have noticed, by far not all guiding stars are level 10.

My main advice: be active, be visible, be helpful - and perhaps you will make it to the list next year!

Imho, @Vickytham , the first thing you have to do is: fill the form, nominate yourself.

If the team doesn’t know who you are, how can they choose you?

Hi @MortenCopenhagen and @JanVanHaver

Happy Saturday! Hope you two are well and thank you for your helpful replies here for how to become a Guiding Star.

@JanVanHaver I love your podcast and just listened to a snippet; also I enjoyed your initiative for cleaning up duplicates on Google Maps.

Really love the idea of Guiding Stars, and I had two follow-up questions.

  1. It looks like Connect Moderator/ Google Map Local Guides team will do the nomination process. Are we still able to use the form referenced in this article to put in a recognition for a fellow Local Guide?
  2. Secondly, I wonder if our Contributions are set to Restricted, would that eliminate us from being nominated as the Connect Moderators/ Local Guides team would not be able to see our photos and reviews unless they have requested to follow?

Look forward to hearing back!

@AZ_2021

The form is still live, but I have not seen any announcements related to 2022 nominations.

I doubt profiles with all or a lot of hidden photos are likely to be selected.

All the best

Thanks @MortenCopenhagen

Now I see! :slightly_smiling_face: That makes sense.

I appreciate your feedback. I can look into making my profile not restricted in that case.

Sorry, that was not what I meant by hidden contributions. I was refering to contributions made private by the system for guideline violations and not profiles set to restricted by the owner. Big difference. I do believe Google staff are able to view contributions even when the profile is restricted.
