Does anybody know?
@nvg_localg, You can’t add mountains to Google Maps. Some geographical locations are mapped by Google based on other data sources like satellite images. You can report errors.
Maybe it’s a bug or an update problem. You may wait. It’ll update very soon if everything is okay.
Hello @nvg_localg,
according to my understanding mountains are geographical features, which we cannot add or change. Same applies to rivers, cities and several other basic elements of the maps only Google is able to manage.
However, we would be able to add an outlook or other touristic points of interest at a mountain.
Hi once more, @nvg_localg
Like @PrasadVR and @WilfriedB told you already, you can’t.
There are no bugs on this, @MehediHasanTanvir , on this side Maps is working as intended. I want to be very clear on this, because it’s important to know what a Local Guide can and what can’t do.
@nvg_localg , try to immagine Google Maps like an onion, with different layers. The core of this is the geographic layer (the base map), where there are continents, mountains, rivers, lakes, islands, and so on.
We cannot touch that layer that is the heart of the whole system.
Over that there is a political layer, were you can find countries, with their borders, cities, villages.
We cannot touch that layer too, but we can suggest changes to the team if supported by official documents, government maps, international or local agreements, for Maps to update the information.
Over that layers there are the layers where we can contribute:
- Roads: Local Guides can add and correct roads in Google Maps.
- Point of Interest: we can add, correct and contribute in Point Of Interest (aka POI), we can add photos and reviews, we can ask and respond to answers.
Then there is another layer that is the subject of one of your post: the transit layer, where the transportation companies add the information about transits in partnership with Google.
To better understand the layers principle you can explore the settings in Google Earth, where you can select in detail the layers that you want to display in the Map.
As I said above, the Local Guides can’t modify the base map
Thank you. I’m new, your info is helpful for me.
@nvg_localg , have you read my previous reply?
What’s not clear in there?
Seems not
To me, it was the most detailed and clear explanation how and why geographic features are handled in Maps, I saw so far and worth to bookmark!
Anyway, hope will enjoy New Year’s Eve, Ermes!
@ErmesT
Happy new year @WilfriedB
Should I use it for a new post, so to use it as a reference?
Why not. Would be helpful, I guess. This question appears often.
@ErmesT @WilfriedB @nvg_localg Yes, that is correct. Mountains, along with other natural geographical features such as rivers, forests, and oceans, are generally mapped on Google Maps based on authoritative data sources like satellite imagery, geographical surveys, and official datasets. These features are not user-generated and cannot be added or edited directly by users. Thanks for onion example very nice
Yeah. But now that I read, I still don’t understand why we can’t add. What if they make mistakes?
