How to add geotagged photos to a place when it is an area?

Hi

I added a natural area as a place to google map.
It has a place marker on the map.
However it is an area rather than a point as assumed by place marker.
When I upload geotagged photos to the place the google map ignores the photos’s position and all photos point to the place marker.

This leads the google map being inaccurate regarding photos’s position.

Are there any way to add geotagged photos to the map which points to the taking position?

Regards

Szabi

EDIT: My intention was posting to helpdesk, but there was no way.

Hi @szabi

Thanks for adding a nature preserve in Google Maps.

The place you added has the capability to post photos in there.

The photos don’t need to be geotagged, but this can be helpful if you upload the photos in Google Photos first, because Maps will suggest you to add the photos according to the geotag.

Help desk is an area where Google write helpful post for covering most of our common questions.

The right label for your post is “How Tos”, with one more edit you will be able to give the right topic

What are Connect topics? will help you to understand what are the topics of the community.

P.s.: Local Guide cannot add “areas” in Google Maps. We can only add points (place makers)

Areas are geographical features, and only Google can add them.

Business that are providing services to an area can add the service area for their businesses, but this is something unrelated to your question

Hi Ermes!

It is clear right now, adding an area is a google privilege.
Overviewing google map, there are thousands of photos which points to the taking position suggesting that a solution is available.
Regarding my intention to add geotagged photos to it’s taking position. Are there any way to do so other than create place for all of them?

Hi @szabi

It is correct that you sometimes will be able to find photos attached to a set of GPS coordinats and not an existing place on Google Maps.

But your assumption that it is possible is not correct. In the past it was possible but no longer. Only exception is uploading 360 photos to Google Maps. They can be added to any GPS coordinats.

I hope this helps you.

Hi @szabi

I was near to miss your reply. In the future please use @ to tag the person you are responding to. In this way you will send a notification.

Creating a place for adding a photo is an extremely bad practice, and recently I removed from Maps literally hundred of places created with this purpose.

Unfortunately there is not an easy way, other than create a custom map.

This is what I do with my Accessible Life program (link below in the signature) where the contributors use My Maps to add the photo exactly in the point where the were taken. Here one of my recent post with the use of My Maps: Passeggiata Naturalistica del Sile - Accessible Life

A publicly shared Map made with My Maps can be also found in a Google Search.

I developed a detailed guide about the use of My maps for adding areas, locations, photos and even videos, with detailed descriptions.

If you want a link to the guide, just let me know.

Additionally, as @MortenCopenhagen said, a 360 photo, even if added to a business listing, is positioned exactly in the geo-tagged position

Hi @ErmesT

You are right when I upload geotagged photos to my google photos the taking position is displayed. Unfortunately uploading these photos to google maps the geotag infos are ignored.

Yeah I know creating place to add photo is not so sophisticated.
However searching over the internet this procedure is widely advised by bloggers, vloggers as the only one solution.

Stepping backwards from the topic subject and speak generally about this issue my point of view is the following. There was a popular feature uploading photo to position, it was widely used. It had only one disadvantes, photos were not organised.
Google decided to improve the map with add place function which really good to gather photos to relevant place, good idea.
However they discontinue the photo positioning feature, which was popular.
Now as a consequence many photos which added to place points to a wrong position not to mention that people creating place to position their photos as you wrote: “literally hundred of places created with this purpose”.
My opinion in this story a google made a huge mistake, while building a better buisness support, they did a technological stepback and I can not blame the people because they still want photo positioning feature.

My suggestion would be that a place could be defined as area, so the photos could gathered under the place and additionally could point to the taking position inside the area as well.
I guess google do not read this topic and take care what feature people want to see back.

So that was my viewpoint in general. I got that the feature I want is not available since map was developed.
It does not change the fact I like biking and hiking just less photos going to be uploaded until it is not solved.

Thanks for your help.

I can assure you that Google read all the topics, @szabi .

Then Google take a decision, that is based on how Maps can help most of the people, not just you or me.

this procedure is widely advised by bloggers, vloggers as the only one solution”. This is one of the way to create “digital waste”.

What I personally do is to make, as I already told you, a customized map, shared publicly

Something like the one here below

Hi @ErmesT

I did create my own custom map where I could define the area boundary and all imported photos were positioned correctly.
Unfortunately it is working only on PC, the Google map service on android devices can not open this custom map.

I have to figure out the reason.
Anyway nice to hear that Google reading all the topics.
However if they focus on helping most of people I guess this issue will not be solved because photo positioning is mainly needed by hikers, while map development goes to business support mainly.
I would not say “digital waste” because this situation was created by Google not the people, they just trying to adapt.

Is your map publicly accessible, @szabi ?

Do you want to share the link with us for a check?

Hi @ErmesT

The map is not published.

It contains three layers.
One layer is the area boundary.
Other two have the imported photos from google photos service.
The map can not be opened by Google map service on android devices because of these two photo’s layers.
When I delete these photo’s layers I can open the custom map.

This is quite strange, @szabi

I have published maps with a lot of different layers without any issues.

Can you make your Map public (or at least visible for who have the link) and share it to me via PM?

Hi @ErmesT

I sent u a PM.

Thanks.
