My journey on the Local Guides program began 4 years ago when I was asked to write a review regarding my experience at my local Department of Motor Vehicles. I had to look for it on Maps, It was my first time. It was a one-star review, the service was terrible, but I liked that I had the opportunity to air my views on an unbiased, user-friendly platform.
As time went on, I got myself a car and visited more and more places, I realised that some spots that I visited regularly were not on Maps. I really wanted to write reviews for these places, so I began adding their details and pictures on the Maps platform. Phone numbers, websites, locations, pictures and, most importantly, reviews of establishments would help me make decisions about where best to visit for lunch, to service my car or take my partner on our next date night. All this information, as simple and basic as it is, helps many people daily and I wanted to contribute to that, I wanted to do my part in supporting local business.
Once I began actively contributing to Maps, I loved it. I loved adding missing information, I loved taking helpful pictures of food and seating. I loved giving reviews and helpful hints regarding vegetarian and vegan options, parking and accessibility. Little did I know that the Local Guides program would be a stepping stone to me becoming an actual qualified Local Tourist Guide!
Contributing to Maps is a way for me to give back to give back to my community. By uploading essential information about public institutions and private business, people can make informed decisions when visiting places. Honest Reviews and pictures also force businesses to be more responsible in terms of customer service, waste management and being environmentally.
I recall visiting a restaurant and as I walked back to my car, I noticed a small waste-free store at the back of a building, you wouldn’t know it was there unless you walked past it. I went in and spoke to the owner and said that I wanted to add the place onto Google Maps. After taking down all the relevant details and snapping some good pictures of the operating times, products and storefront, I got home and added it to maps. The Refill Den was approved a day later. A week or so after, I received a call from the owner to say that adding the store to Maps has increased customer visits and phone call inquiries! I was delighted, especially because the ethos of The Refill Den connects with my own values of being environmentally friendly.
I loved learning more about the different places in my city so much that in 2018, I began studies to become a qualified, registered Tourist Guide which changed my life. I learned so much more about my city and country after doing this and I enjoy showing people around my community and to lesser-known attractions in Durban. It has become a passion of mine. I formed my own company, Travel Bug Tours and now I do shore excursions and private tours around Durban as an actual Local Guide! This is how the Google Local Guides program has impacted my life.
Thank you, Google, for showing me what a difference each of us can make in the world!
