How public feedback helped me scale my hobby into a mindset

Greetings, I am Mahmoud Turki. A Tunisian Software Engineer & a Web Developer living in Paris . I am a LEVEL 8 Local Guide, among the top 1% contributors in Tunisia and Paris. I have several public lists and I have added more than 2400 pictures and 250 reviews to the platform. I have a master photographer and a master reviewer badges. And now, I can’t get enough of contributing.

  • Taking a leap of faith

I joined this community 5 years ago. At the beginning, I was just competing with my friend about reviewing places and adding new ones to the map.

After reaching level 5, I decided to take it to the next level and in just 2 years I jumped from level 5 to level 8 and I cannot believe that I reached this today!!!

  • Gamifying accountability

Thanks to stats page, seeing people viewing my pics … more than 1.3 million views made me realize how I can impact decisions !! So I did not just take pictures immediately … I took more time when preparing shots … I took better angles for monuments … I took more specific details … I took menu prices for restaurants and cafes … I took hours of opening and closing for shops and marketplaces … I took every important information that someone could consider useful.

  • Being a bigger contributor made me a better contributor

Seeing people liking my reviews about certain places and replying to them made me write longer and richer reviews … my latest reviews were more than 250 characters … describing the whole experience … the staff … the prices … the vibe… the decor … my favourite thing about the place, my recommendations and of course my criticism even if I give 5 stars …

  • More people relying on me = More Contributions

Seeing my newly added places getting more than 350.000 views made me look in every street corner to add new places to the map in order to help people find them. I added cafes, restaurants, mini shops, butchers, bakers, doctor private cabinets and more to the map.

Contributing has become a mindset.

You never try a place without sharing your experience with others.” This is my code !

Thank you Google for this great product : "Google Maps’'! I hope I get selected to the CL2020! Looking forward to this life changing experience .
