I am always fascinated by castles in Japan. Anybody know which are the must visit castles in Japan?
Hi @JSeng ,
Thanks for sharing!
That is a tough question, but a quick Google search tells me there are more than a hundred castles in Japan.
I have never been there myself but I would love to explore every single one some day.
Can you tell us a bit more about this Nagoya castle?
Regarding the must visit castles of Japan, maybe @Ivi_Ge can be of help.
Hey @JSeng ,
Thank you for sharing and this is a really great question
As I know from my Japanese friends there were as many as five thousand castles in Japan. Today, there are around 100. When I was living in Japan and I had the opportunity to visited some of them. So I would like to share with you.
I was living in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, and of course there is a Fukuyama Castle there. This castle was built and used after war-time period as an administrative purpose. And just like many castles in Japan it was destroyed and rebuild as a cultural symbol later on.
The second one is Osaka Castle. It is one of the largest castle in Japan. I had to take a look inside. Long steep stairs which can be tiring but offers a decent view. And the last one I’ve been is Himeji Castle and maybe this one is my favorite. It is close to the main train station in Himeji city. The castle has a famous panoramic view especially in cherry blossom season. The inside of the castle should be visited and it is possible to go to the top level of the castle where you can see the city.
I hope you will like them
P.S: Thank you for tagging me @MortenSI . I would like to tag @YasumiKikuchi and @HiroyukiTakisawa because I am sure they will add some interesting information.
Hi @MortenSI ,
I would love to share with you more about Nagoya Castle but unfortunately it was closed during new year period when I was there last week Maybe I will go visit Nagoya again in the future to check out the castle. And yes, I would love to visit all of them some day.
Thanks @Ivi_Ge for sharing the photos, they are very nice
I visited Himeji castle some time ago but I missed the sakura season.
I will make due with Google then @JSeng , and I will definitely put it on my list og things to see, if I ever get to visit Japan.
Thank you for a wonderful post @JSeng
Thank you for introducing me @Ivi_Ge
As @MortenSI says, Including small buildings during the Edo era there were over 20,000 castles. Currently there are about 200 castles left, the real thing among them is 12 castles. Himeji Castle is one of the 12 castles existing from Edo era🏯. The pure white appearance is beautiful and most popular among Japanese😃.
Thank you for sharing this nice post and interesting question @JSeng
And thank you for tagging me @Ivi_Ge
There are a lot of castles in Japan. And do you know there are many ruins of castles more than the castles in Japan?
In my region also, there are some ruins. One of them, Morioka Castle ruins park has no castle. But visitors will be able to feel the history and environment through the beautiful stone walls and the monument on the center of the ruins.
Thanks @YasumiKikuchi . Can you share the names of the 12 castles you mention? I know Himeji castle is also a world heritage site. I wish to visit all 12 castles you mention in the future
Thanks @HiroyukiTakisawa . Now I have to add some of those castle ruins to my list too
You are right, @HiroyukiTakisawa
In the Meiji era, an order to demolish the castle was made, so that only Ishigaki remained. It is also beautiful.
Hi @JSeng
I have not visited yet, but I strongly recommend Takeda Castle Ruins. Castle ruins float in the clouds, as if it were a castle in the sky. It is said to be Machu Picchu of Japan.
Here is a list of 12 castles, so please refer to it. List: Japan’s 12 Original-Construction Castles
Thanks very much @YasumiKikuchi . I am marking all these castles on my Google Maps list!!!
