How many cameras 📸 in the 🌒 Space? Explore Space with Google Maps.

This is certainly not new (it was announced on October 16, 2017) but I wonder how many of us have actually used Google Maps to explore the space of our solar system.

Four days later it was also announced here in Connect, even if specifically focused on Street View.

Yes, that’s true. With Google Maps for desktop we can explore the space around us. This is funny and exciting at the same time. If you haven’t tried yet, well, this is the right moment

If you haven’t tried it yet, well, now is the right time to do it. You can do it the easy way, by following this link, or get there yourself via Maps. It’s not difficult, you just have to:

  • Select “Satellite” as the “Map Type”
  • Select “Globe view”
  • Zoom out

Suddenly the Maps menu will disappear, and you will be in SPACE.

Another Menu will appear on the left side, with the possibility to explore planets and moons of …. well, this is something you will have to discover by yourself.

Space photographers challenge

Local Guides love photography, this is well known.

Try to imagine having the chance to be in space, would you take a camera with you? Well, I sure would take it. And the real astronauts? Those who are in space now, or have been in the past, will they have brought a camera?

I know the answer, and it is YES!!

One of the wonderful places that we will be able to explore in Space is the International Space Station. Yes, the link you will need to find in Maps will send you inside the Cupola, and from there you can move around the Station, look around you, discover details.

Today’s challenge is: How many cameras are there inside the International Space Station, or rather, how many cameras have you managed to discover? And how many photographic lenses? Count them and add a screenshot here in your reply.

I’ll give you a clue. As soon as you enter, look around, and you will see two of them

Are they the only two in the Cupola? This you will have to find out for yourself.

I just know that I wished I was the certified photographer who took the photos of this tour. Wouldn’t you have wanted to?

Well, it’s your turn now.

How many cameras and how many photo lenses have you discovered? Where did you find them?

Have fun then

I went to Google Maps, clicked Satellite but there is no Globe view option available. Is this only available on certain apps?

Thank you for asking, @MC25

The feature is available on Desktop only, even if I would love too to have it available in Google Maps App.

Let’s try with this link to see if you are able to enter the Cupola and explore the ISS on mobile

Thank you kindly for your reply. I pulled out the laptop and found it. How fun. I will be sure to share it with my foster children who will totally enjoy it. Thanks for flagging it up.
