How I've connected people to essential places during London's COVID-19 lockdown

By far the most interesting thing I have done as a Google Local Guide has been to use Lists as a way of connecting local community members to local businesses that are still open during London’s COVID-19 lockdown. By creating public lists and sharing these to online forums and groups, I’ve been able to give my neighbours - particularly those most vulnerable - information about where they can access essential items and services. I have also connected my community with businesses who are getting creative with how they’re operating during this time.

Take a look at the three lists I’ve created so far:

This list includes grocery stores and farmers markets that are still operating as usual and are supplying people with essentials like canned foods, fresh fruits and vegetables as well as supplies like laundry powder and toilet paper.

It’s great to see that some grocers who usually operate on Golborne and Portobello Rd who are still open, whether in their usual spots or online via delivery services. This is especially helpful for those who can’t leave the house because they’re in isolation.

I’ve already had great feedback about this list in particular from my local community forum from someone who is in self-isolation.

This list includes cafes, restaurants and other food services that are offering collection and home delivery to the local community, including those who are most vulnerable during this time.

I’m very excited that one of our favourite local Mesopotamian cafe/deli Babajani has reopened its doors. They’re offering a delicious special takeaway menu as well as a number of specialty pantry items to-go.

It’s been an especially hard time for the wellness industry as trainers rely so much on human interaction to do their work. So, this final list is of the local gyms and wellness studios that have unfortunately had to close their doors. They’ve been able to pivot quickly and are now offering paid and free services on their websites and social channels.

This includes a gym my partner and I love, Opus Fitness. Opus is an incredible fitness and wellness studio now offering a range of classes with pre-recorded, live-stream and personal training options available.

As we adapt to our new ways of living in this world that is more technologically connected than ever before, it’s more important than ever to use the amazing tools of the internet and Google Maps to find new ways to support each other - especially during this global crisis. I can’t wait to get more feedback about these lists to continue help the communities I am part of, and to help inspire others to do the same.

This is amazing! Your list is truly valuable as a helpful information, and also it does reduce the risk of unnecessary travel. Fortunately my area is not as limited yet, but it is something to be considered. Thank you for sharing!

What a brilliant idea in this time of crisis. Keeping local businesses connected to the local community is going to be huge as we navigate through the era of uncertainty. Love the concept. I may do the same here in Clemton Park Sydney!

Nice one Laura!
