How I made the most out of my Photography through the Local Guides Program.

I love taking pictures, I love lining up a subject perfectly within gridlines on the screen and tapping the capture button on my smartphone. If I’m being completely honest, I cant get enough of it! and there’s no better platform to share these amazing shots than on Google Maps! and of course with the Local Guides Community.

I believe that an important factor in becoming a good photographer is finding your niche and taking as many pictures as possible; these could be anything from nature shots to cars. For me, I have always been passionate about architecture, and taking pictures of buildings at specific angles that give them a symmetrical look. Pictures with interesting yet realistic perspectives tend to attract viewers more which is excellent on Google Maps where I feel my Photography has found a home. I love sharing on there because I feel like I’m reaching out to an audience and influencing more people to get out and explore responsibly while also Influencing my friends to take more pictures and improve on their Photography.

My journey oddly enough started with technical drawing. It sparked my interest in certain perspectives and projections when illustrating buildings in architecture. While it has never been my main focus in University, it is certainly a supporting skill to my photography. The next aspect that tied everything together was an efficient creative workflow, which is fancy talk for the time and effort between capturing a picture and publishing it. You dont always need a professional camera to take great shots as i always brag to my friends that I take all my pictures with my smartphone and I’m so proud of it. I believe a great picture comes when its not necessarily planned but rather point and shoot at the very moment you are immersed in a great view. Google Maps has provided a great way to share these moments through geotagging and also suggesting photos to post. This has largely influenced me to be more active in the program which in turn lead to me improving on my skills which is why the Local Guide Program means a lot to me.

Besides Improving my skills, the program has lead me to plan more trips that get me out there in the wild concrete jungles exploring and genuinely making great memories and experiences with friends and on my own. I think about places to visit a lot more than I did last year before I joined the local guides program and I have suggested so many places to visit from Museums to parks to Heritage sites. Its such a great feeling to have this opportunity, while its hard to remember the exact momemt I decided to join the Local Guides program, I am so glad I did! but my journey has only began and there is more to look forward to.

There is truly no limit to your potential when you make the most out of the Local Guides program

Hi @TinasheMukombe ,

It looks like this is your application post for Connect Live 2020, so I will move it to the Local Stories board, where all applications should appear. Here you can find everything you need to know about writing a post for your Connect Live 2020 application. Don’t forget to review your final post and make sure you are not missing any of the points mentioned. If you are - feel free to edit your publication from the three dots and add them.

For more information on the forum, please check this thread.

Hi @TinasheMukombe

I like your approach with finding interesting angles and details. I’m still perplexed by your concrete shot. I don’t get it. Please add some words to allow us to understand it.

Cheers

Hi @MortenCopenhagen

Thank you for showing Interest in my post and specifically the picture of the Museum. The picture is a shot of the Museum Rooftop I took from the ground floor of the main entrance hall, looking up. The three rail-like fixtures are elevators on each wall that take tourists to and from the museum exhibit which starts at the top floor and ends at the bottom. You can see a plane sticking out of one of the floors which is part of the exhibit. The view immediately caught my attention when i first saw it, I find that the picture in a way resembles that of a rotary engine.

Are the walls really as curved as they look in your shot?

Cheers

Thanks. I’m currently so much into understanding how perspectives gets distorted when getting transfered from 3D reality to flat 2D images. So my brain could not make sense of your ceiling shot. Now things make sense.

Cute elevators!

Cheers and thanks again.
