Hello
I want to share my experience of adding photos of landmarks in google maps.
Like many, before traveling I check my route on google maps for resting points, gas stations, places to eat and so on. Usually, besides checking the route I search google street images or photos of that places. If I can’t find any, or there are few of them, I mark this place as waypoint. When I am on the route, I make stops in that place to take pictures and notes, in order to contribute to google maps.
I prefer to take pictures with my camera, not with the phone, so I can choose lens and exposure better. Also I may edit the photos to emphasize the most important things. I recommend tracking the route for later synchronization of the pictures with GPS location. In addition I take backup notes to make sure I place the photos in the correct points.
What things do I consider when taking pictures on the route:
-places for parking or for car stops on roadside
-arranged places for picnics
-if there are u-turns or one way roads near chosen location (gas station, cafes, etc)
-road surface
-private/closed or restricted access roads
-signboards with the place name and working schedule
Any information that is useful for travelers
What pictures shouldn’t be placed on google maps
- people
- private houses and proprieties
- police, firefighters, ambulances
…
I think there are no rules for that, just common sense
