In 2012 I moved with my family to Germany from the UK to start a new job and a new adventure. This was exciting but of course not without its difficulties, such as learning a new language, adapting to a new culture and finding out where everything was.
Before we even arrived in Germany we had become reliant on Google Maps to research places to live, schools, amenities etc and this continued in our new home when looking for things like a dentist, a restaurant, or a fun place to visit with the family. For example, The T-Rex in the photo lives at Dinosaurierpark on the border with Luxembourg, somewhere we would never have found without Google Maps.
Having gained so much from Local Guide reviews I figured maybe others could benefit from my experiences so I started writing my own reviews.
I felt a bit self-conscious about it at first, especially taking photos of food in restaurants! However, as I saw that people were looking at the photos and my reviews were getting some “likes”, I felt encouraged to carry on! I try to focus on food outlets (restaurants or shops) and hotels. These are the places I want to know about when visiting somewhere new! Living in Central Europe is great as it gives the opportunity to experience so many varied cuisines from different cultures.
People often ask me if I miss anything from England. To be honest there is not much now, and in any case I have found new stuff in Germany to enjoy, but there are two things that I still crave! One is tea bags (no visitor from the UK is allowed in the house without a supply!) and the other is fish and chips! There is something about the combination of crispy fried fish, piping hot thick chips with tangy salt and vinegar that is irresistible! Whenever I get the chance to visit the UK one of the first things I do is go to a chip shop! I have even found a few places in Bonn that serve it! The photo below is of some fish and chips I had a few years ago when visiting relatives back in England. For me it sums up home comforts! I find it incredible that over a half a million people have viewed this photo! Check out my list to see some of my favourite places to eat fish and chips!
