The theme
The main purpose of the meet-up was to share information about the Local Guides program to the people who are completely unaware of the program. The aim was to make new local guides and encourage the existing ones to make more quality contributions.
What we have done there
The location was the playground of my high school. I had graduated from this school 2010 and I felt nostalgic being there. I had traveled to the place from Faridpur city which is about 20 km away. We have picked up the shingaras from a local fast food maker early.
I had arrived at the venue early with a few other friends. Then other attendees started coming. And after a few moments, we sat on the grass to start the introduction. After the introduction, I have started talking about Local Guides program. Majority of the attendees were unaware of Local Guides program. So I have enlightened them with the followings.
- What Local Guides is
- Why we should contribute
- What impacts it will have on us
- How to contributes (add, edit, photos, reviews etc.)
- Points, level and badges
- Perks
After the introduction, we started the Photo & Geo-Walk. We walked through the adjacent market and added shops which were not on maps, added photos, and edited exiting places. I had shown them how to add a new place, photos including dos and donâts when contributing.
Now read the story with photos and captions (I have found it easy and helpful than reading a lot of texts).
After the Photo & Geo- walk we returned to the school field and sat down to have some snacks and cold drinks.

How does it feel
Young people of the rural area are very interested in learning about Google Maps and Local Guides. They want to work to see their community on the maps. This is why when they have seen our meet-up promotions they had eagerly come to know more.
I think you see from the photos that how keen they are to learn things. After seeing these large number of attendees and their interest I felt happy. I was afraid that the meet-up will end up having a couple of attendees but they had proved me wrong. I got to meet many juniors from my school.
There are still many things we can do to promote Local Guides program to the people who are unaware of this program. We should promote it more to make more local guides. I hope to continue hosting meet-ups to share more about Local Guides whenever I come to Faridpur (my home).
Thank you!
Thank you for reading the recap. Have you hosted a meet-up recently*?* If yes, please share the link in the comment so I can read and learn from you. If you have not hosted a meet-up yet, host one soon and I bet you will love it. And donât worry if there is a very low number of attendees or none at all. For motivation, I suggest you read this post by @PaulPavlinovich which is my motivation for hosting meet-ups.
