How Do You Start Meet-Ups in Your City? Specifically, in Kansas City?

I have no idea how to connect with other Local Guides in Kansas City. Local Guides, that is, who are interested in Meet-Ups and/or are interested in adding to or improving Google Maps. I have been thinking on it a lot, and I haven’t really come up with what I think is a good idea. If you can help me with this, please comment!

In the meantime, my idea is this: Every time I write a review, I’m going to read reviews from other Local Guides Level 5 or higher (assuming their at 5+ because they’re purposefully or accidentally engaged in the LG program). I am going to pick one reviewer from each place I review and invite them to visit this post. From here, I hope to develop a group of people who one day may want to do a Meet-Up.

Bad idea? Good idea? Only time will tell.

It wouldn’t be a no-no to do this as a comment on someone’s review, would it?

I’ve had a chance to chat with @lakeoftea . I’ve seen Connect posts from @Havocstate , @LanaJo @Craigwilson , @VictorD_1 , @Spencer_Pellant , @AbelAlejandro , @WilliamRock , @kimbeasley … Are any of you still active Local Guides? Do you want to try to get some Meet-Ups going in KC in 2020? Do you know other LGs you can help us recruit to gather together?

Idk how I’m a local guide but I’ll take it.
I just like posting cool pics. And stoked it helps other people I guess. Meet ups can be fun I suppose.

Hey! I’m highly active on maps. The local guide’s app is a bit outdated in general, so I don’t use it as often. I’m open to hearing ideas! I think I’d feel better about attending once the weather is better.

Hi, @NexusKC . I’m local guide from Indonesia. I’ve hosted some meet ups in my city here in Indonesia.

What we did at the beginning is we just create the meet up event. We don’t really care about how much the attendees are at the beginning. We just start it. Eventhough maybe there’s nobody showed up. We just create the event.

And then we spread the news via our own social media, that we, local guides, will make an event at that day. Just a simple meet up agenda at the beginning: foodcrawl.

After that, we write the recap about that event and share that on this Connect. By then, hopefully, there would be one or two other local guides in the city aware of the past event and would likely to join to the next event.

Just simply create it, share it on social media, and preparing for the next meet up.

Or maybe you could “recruit” your friend to become a local guide? Hahaa…

Hi @NexusKC it’s exciting to know you want to host meetups going forward.

Remember, meetups can come in different forms depending on the city, culture and other things. You could start in your own little way.

Plan what you want do - a walk, map updating, photo walk, food crawl etc. Then submit the meetup for approval. Share the link across your social media handles. Invite your friends and colleagues to attend.

You may have other Local Guides attend, sometimes you may end up being the only attendee but that’s how Local Guides roll! One good thing is that a new person would probably become an LG during your meetups. This has happened several times after posting great photos of our meetups.

So, don’t spend time thinking, just do it and experience the fun. If you need any help, I am here and @PaulPavlinovich can give more ideas too. Don’t forget to join @lakeoftea lakeofteafor his meetup too.

Thank you for the Kansas City button badge at Connect Live.

Good luck

Emeka

It would be great to get everyone together again.

What are your thoughts on location.

Maybe we can do something in overland Park.

Hello @NexusKC ! Nice to “meet” you! I would be interested in helping to plan or helping in other way I can to host a meet-up. Is there an event you want to plan around or goal you want to accomplish?

I’m generally OK with anywhere in the metro. I don’t get to OP as much as I used to - I used to work there. Not opposed to getting out and about a little again.

@rizzsmiles AWESOME, thank you! I have only attended one meet-up and it was virtual. I wasn’t sure how to find other LGs in the city, so I’m pleased so many of the people I tagged have replied. Now I need to come up with a concept for this meet-up, I guess! I’m open to suggestions.

I think its a great idea to downright invite them. But I also think there is just a lack of awareness for this site(?) app(?) I have been leaving reviews on stuff steadly for about 6 months and just discovered you HAVE to be on here to add friends. So maybe promote more. I’ll get back to you on the how. BTW me and my girlfriend are new to the area and are about this Google guide so if we can help let us know
