How do you follow posts from people on Local Guides Connect?

It is a simple question but I cannot find how to do it. How do you follow a person on Local Guides Connect in order to be notified of their new posts?

Thanks,

Jeff Muir

Hi @JeffMuir

You may find some useful tips in this post by TraciC.

Also you can fine tune the notifications through Settings (Click the Gear Icon in the top right corner) → Subscriptions & notifications → Notification Settings.

Thank you @C_T
The post from @TraciC only seems to mention how to follow topics. I have seen this post before but did not find any mention of how to follow individuals. There might be a way to do this using the advanced tools but I could not see it.

Have you followed an individual here? Can you please share how you did it?

Thanks,

Jeff

I can not follow local individuals or guides either. The follow-up or subscription option is for themes, trends and others, as indicated on the main Connect page. I suppose that in the advanced search it refers to this year’s AriMar publication. How can I search in Connect? Visiting profiles But there is no follow-up notification. The search is manual. I really interested in this topic. I write this to be able to follow this topic, but I can not follow you, until I find the solution, I would also like to know if there is any way.
I follow the publications through the notifications that I receive, when I intervene in a topic or I give a Kudo, that is my form. The Trends option for Local Guides publications has helped the issue.

Best regards.

Very nice reply. It is good to hear that other people are having the same problem. It might turn out to be impossible or difficult to follow a person on Local Guides Connect.

Does anyone know if this is a proposed idea?

It has been proposed a couple of times and those suggestions are being merged into this post @JeffMuir

Thank you for the link. I read through it and it seemed to be mostly about following people on Google Maps.

I did not read every reply. Did you see one that talked about Local Guides Connect following?

Thanks

Sorry @JeffMuir , I had posted the wrong link indeed. I knew there was a post, though, as I had suggested this myself in the past. Unfortunately the post where my contribution was merged into now had status Closed, so I would not get my hopes up for seeing this idea come true.

@JanVanHaver Thank you for your quick reply

It is a shame that this is not possible. It is true that it is difficult to find new content from others on Connect. It seems the technology is there but it has not be configured to work.

It is so common to support following other users in social media. Perhaps that is one of the reasons that Local Guides use Twitter and Instagram to share with friends.

There currently is no way to follow an individual on Connect or on Maps @JeffMuir unfortunately. I agree it would be a nice feature.

I’m pretty sure I vote on an idea for follow a while back in Idea Exchange.

@JeffMuir Try to brainstorm some open voting on this topic within Connect, but they are many and written with different language graphemes.
Maybe you have to quote a moderator or publish the idea that applies within Connect.
Or wait for more comments.

There is an indirect way to follow a Local Guide, @JeffMuir , that is the only one actually available:

You can add a Local Guide on your “friend list”, clicking on “Add Friend” that you will find on the lower part of the profile page.

Your list of friend is visible on the “friends tab” of your messaging page.

For every friend you will be able to see the latest post or reply on Connect.

In addition, it appear that the photo you used on the post is very popular on Internet. Are you the author?

If not, do you own the right or, do you have the permission from the author, for sharing it?

If the answer to my last question is NO, please edit your post to remove the picture.

In Local Guides Connect we care about author’s right, included yours. For more information please read: How do I follow the original content guidelines on Connect?

Here an excerpt:

"Only share photos you have taken yourself or received permission to use directly from the copyright owner. Do not download and post photos from Google Search, Google Maps, social media, stock photo websites, or elsewhere on the internet without receiving permission from the owner of that photo." …

… Posts with images or content used without the copyright holder’s permission will be removed from Connect."

Thanks for reply. I am not overly experienced with Connect. I tried to follow your advice about following people and could not find the messaging friends tab. Some things are harder to find. I will keep on trying.

As for the image, it is from Unsplash.com. Any photo on that site is allowed to use. You have the option to credit the photographer if you want. So, yes, I had permission to use that photo. If Connect has a policy against free no-strings stock photos, I will understand and remove it. No big deal really.

Thanks,

Hi @JeffMuir

Do you have any Local Guide on your “friends” list? If so, following the link, you should be able to see the tab

As for the photos, the permission should not be “implicit”. It could be a good idea to simply give credit, as indicated on the already mentioned post

@ErmesT

Thanks for the clarification. I finally found where you were talking about. Looks like it will work out.

As for the photo, I just replaced it with one of mine. If I decided to use another Unsplash photo, I will be sure to give credit.

Cheers!

Just to clear things up for anyone that might have found this thread.

It is possible to add people as friends and then go the section for private messages to see what their latest post was. Unfortunately it does not indicate that there is new content on the main screen and overall it is not easy to use. I suspect that it also only lists the most recent post and there is a chance you could miss some.

I appreciate the workaround since it is better than nothing but wanted to warn you that it might not be what you want in order to follow someone.
