I keep it simple @nish_25 I tell them I contribute to Maps to support my community by keeping information up to date.
I’ve been told I’m Google’s slave, for them I point out that of course the information helps Google make money, but that we all use Maps for free and really I’m helping the community. Google making money is a side effect not a direct result of my work.
Hi @nish_25 you just got all the best answers from the above comments. Sometimes other people will take this answers and use them against you, for example: ‘‘you are not getting anything from contributing to Google map’’ my response will be, at least I am helping someone here unlike on social media, you are not helping anyone by uploading photos and writing comments, but on Google map, these enable others to make informed decisions from our photos, reviews and edits.
I always try to have fun when I get questions like this. I try to vary my answer with things like “What else could I do to justify buying a new 360 spherical camera?” or " Who else is ever gonna map the rural farmland of north central Wisconsin?". I look forward to someday looking back at some of these old photos and seeing what has changed on the local landscape.
I try to let people know that for me it is a hobby. It is something that I enjoy doing. It gets me out of the house, exercising and moving around. I get to combine photography, local information, and travel all into one activity. I think my favorite answer is simply a smile and “You should try it!”
