If you go to the center of the city of San José in Costa Rica, the addresses of the places are usually given in streets and avenues. The avenues go from east to west and the streets from north to south. We must imagine the avenues and streets as if they were the x axis and the y axis respectively. This axis divides to the center of the city in four quadrants or districts, Catedral, Merced, Hospital and Carmen. Remember that if someone gives you an address that indicates streets and avenues as a reference, you should use the following map:
Avenue 0 is also known as “Avenida Central” (Central Avenue).
Interestingly, the “La Merced” park is not located in the Merced district, but is located in the Hospital district.
