The grocery next to my office has a great taco counter with a menu that would be worth having in Maps. Is there a way to add this in that I’m not seeing?
hI @CJBinATX take a picture on the menu to add it to the location
Well yes, but I was wondering if there was an official way like in a restaurant listing. It would be super helpful to have a link to their online menu to order ahead and stuff.
@CJBinATX if there is another valid version you will find it soon from the moderators.
thanks
A grocery store probably would not have a menu, @CJBinATX , @To_paul , but for sure can have a Food & Drink section in photos
This depends mostly of GMB so, if the activity is not claimed, you should suggest them to claim the business, @CJBinATX
Can you kindly share a link of the listing?
Thanks, that’s what I’ve started to do, label food in that section.
I’m surprised that they don’t have it with the number of markets and bodegas that also make tacos and sandwiches and stuff.
Great, @CJBinATX
Please show them their listing, and suggest them to claim it. So they will be probably able to add a real menu.
In addition, I want to invite you to use @ when you are responding, choosing the name on the pop-up. In this way we will get a notification.
Thank you
Hi @CJBinATX ,
I think that part of the issue here is the applied category to this supermarket. As Ermes was saying, supermarkets normally don’t have menus. It suspects that Google Maps decides when or when not to show the menu info, based on the POI’s category.
All establishments on Google Maps have a primary category, but also can (optionally) have one or more secondary categories. So your supermarket could have “grocery store” as its primary category and “takeaway restaurant” as its secondary category.
We, as Local Guides, can only edit a place’s primary category, but business owners of claimed businesses can manage the secondary categories in their Google My Business settings.
The question if adding a secondary-category, where it is logic to have the menu info, will make a difference, remains unanswered. Perhaps @Flash can tell us more about this deeper insight into how information is or is not shown on Google Maps based on primary and secondary categories.
Since @JanVanHaver is “addicted” to all category related info, I am also tagging him here.
Hello @CJBinATX
As surmised the menu option is triggered by the place having the category of restaurant. While we can only see the category that was set to primary on the map, we can figure out that this POI does not have a restaurant category at all by searching for restaurants. You can see that this business does not appear, meaning it does not have any of the restaurant categories applied to it, even if you zoom in close to ensure it is not just being filtered due to better results.
To be clear, a place appearing does not then mean it has that category; as Google does use other sources to figure out when to show features. For examples, notice the category of Chevron in this search as compared to it’s primary category and then also notice the category of Nationwide in this search as compared to it’s primary category.
I’m unsure if the menu option appears for places with restaurant categories only as secondary categories, but this primary category is appropriate. The only way to get a restaurant category added as an additional category is for the owner to do it themselves via the GMB dashboard.
