About 5 years back I started contributing in Google map just as fun and hobby but that turned out a very interesting and useful thing for me.
Before that I did not observe the things around me keenly and minutely because I always thought why should I observe things around me until and unless I have some business with them. But when I started contributing in Map then I found that I was not knowing many things about my own town where I was living since so long. I never knew that a particular service was available hardly at a distance of 200 m from my house and I was struggling to find that and asking my neighbours and friends about it.
Today I know many specific and interesting things about my town and share them with my friends who are surprised by the volume of those information with me. I suggest them to go to Google Map and ascertain that.
So being a local guide is a sort of learning about your own town in details which itself is an achievement. Do you also feel the same way? Please share your experiences.
In the small village where I live they know me as “the men with the camera”, and sometimes, when a new businesses open, they inform me, because they probably think that a photo added by me in their business listings can help to improve their businesses.
I think this is the right way to contribute, improving the information about the world around us, the one were we are experts, or at least we should be.
It is true that watching the world through the lenses of a Local Guide can definitely change our way to watch the world.

I very much agree with you. Being an active Local Guide certain helps increase awareness of your surroundings and it is a pleasure to know more by heart where to find places. And it becomes easier to navigate without using Google Maps - haha - after being much more aware of changes and finding new places to add to the map.

@ErmesT , very interesting and well said. In a small place like a small village or small town this becomes very interesting and important to have the information of various places, shops, parks, and other similar entities and Google Map helps us in that in many ways.
