How Credible are Small Business Additions on Google Maps?

Local Guides Level 10 and above are amazing people.

Some LGs have points in excess of 200,000 or 300,000

I inspected Google Maps contributions of a few such LGs.

I noticed that a majority of the business listings are just single photos taken from the street level.

These are particularly in India and the SubContinent, as seen in the collage above.

Problems with such small business listings:

  1. Business listed with just one photo from the street.

  2. Business shrouded in adjacent shops.

  3. No details about what service they provide or goods sold.

  4. No other photo about the vibe or quality, if it is a restaurant or a hospital.

  5. No information if the business is operational.

  6. A very short or No review.

Name, address, operating hours, website, email, and phone number if available, however, are listed.

I want to know:

  1. Is this a good practice that Google approves of?

  2. Are such listings helpful for people using Google Maps?

  3. Does Google consider such listings as credible?

  4. Does Google encourage this quick-and-dirty style of listings?

Going ahead, should I write reviews of businesses I have visited for either buying goods or services?

There are hundreds of such unlisted businesses in my neighborhood and I want to go ahead adding them.

Any inputs or advice are highly appreciated

Hello @TusharSuradkar
Kudos for raising a pertinent question.
But first, I want to know how did you correlate an LG with new place creations? Are you going by the first review appearing at that place?

Next, the place creation has indeed become a part of gamification.
Many persons go on adding places to gain points & badges. Not only there are duplication, but also many gross mistakes in spelling are evident at many POIs. These mistakes have resulted in funny automatic translation of which I presented some examples in one of my posts.

Further, in a hurry to create a new place, only the mandatory fields get an update leaving the rest of the information. Maybe that’s helping the buddies to “Discover missing info” and grab some points.

Third, the Maps app doesn’t display every POI. One must do a text search before jumping to place creation.
Even then, in my opinion, there is nothing wrong in creating a listing if the place doesn’t exist. That helps customers to find services around them, quickly.

Thank you @C_T for your thoughts and opinion.

This coming from a top expert means a lot to me.

I will go ahead and add small businesses with minimal information since they would be helpful to people searching for it.

“But first, I want to know how did you correlate an LG with new place creations?”

I did not understand this. I believe an LG creates or adds a new place…

“Are you going by the first review appearing at that place?”

These reviews are of places written by just one person or at the most two and there are no useful pictures or information about the small business.

I definitely want to rise up the Level ladder but don’t want to end up spending valuable time writing reviews that Google does not value much or if such business additions damage my little reputation. So far, all of my reviews and reports have been exhaustive and detailed.

BR,

Tushar

If the business being added to Maps is a really existing business, @TusharSuradkar , there is no problem adding it to the map with just the basic info and a picture from the outside. The main goal should be to make sure Maps contains an up to date representation of the real world with all possible points of interest on it.

Whether this is a small business or not, whether you are a customer there or not does not matter at all. (If you want to write a review you need to have been there of course)

I am regularly making trips myself in different cities just wandering around and adding, adapting or removing any businesses that crosses my path and is in need of a contribution. It’s simply my way of making sure I get plenty of exercise

Thanks for the clarification @TusharSuradkar

You made a statement that you examined the profiles of LGs with beyond 200K points & next statement about incomplete business listing. That made me think that you are correlating both. If that’s not so, you can ignore that.

Reviews are highly useful in many cases. That was the principal resource for me for locating Indian Vegetarian restaurants while overseas. And, that experience became a driver for me for creating detailed reviews.

Nevertheless, regarding your next expectation, I suggest going through these two posts once again thoroughly. #1 & #2. I have provided sufficient clues in that.
Since you use a desktop, the task is easy. You can change the default language in Maps to Marathi or Hindi, through settings. Also, install a browser extension “Google Input tools” which make it simpler to write Indic languages. But, I guess you already have that since you are making posts in Marathi and Hindi.
After that, the moment you open a POI for editing, you will find at many places in Maharashtra with suggestion to “Add a name in Marathi”.
Go ahead & contribute in that.
That will benefit the persons who prefer to use local languages on their phones.

The automated exercise to add local language translation had many lacunae & I believe the action is not on any more & hence the need.
Nevertheless you can also locate errors in the translations which are appearing already, suggest a correction & earn points. Why a cake shops name should contain “बकरी” in the translation? So you can explore both the tracks. Add translation wherever missing or correct the wrong one.
Hope, you will find all the four links useful.

Thank you @JanVanHaver for an elaborate response.

I am delighted that you could see the gist of what I was trying to ask.

Your explanation clears the cobweb around the dilemma I was facing.

I am in the same situation as you and will start enjoying a daily walk at the same time adding new businesses to Google Maps.

Thanks for your comment @venkatesh322

The translation is poor so I am unable to understand.

but I agree many small businesses do not even have phones or emails or websites.

Hi @TusharSuradkar , @C_T , and @JanVanHaver

I am wondering if we should add street wendors with a table on wheels that are moved daily? But can be found at approximately the same place every day. Normally, businesses should only be added if they have a permanent address or at least a permanent sign indicating business name and opening hours.

Cheers

That’s a sound proposal @MortenCopenhagen
Many street vendors do the business at the same place year after year. They have a licence also for street hawking.
However, since the business is on the wheels, many do not have a presence on the Maps. A tweak in the policy will help these small vendors.
BTW: Glad to see your comments after a significant gap.

Agree with you @MortenCopenhagen and further to what @C_T has said there are several business-on-wheels that are immovable.

By that I mean these are not concrete or permanent structures in the traditional sense but are carts that are permanently stationed at a place.

So they fall into a category between hawkers and small businesses.

These immovable small businesses on carts should definitely have a place on the map.

Hi @TusharSuradkar

I agree with you, but I think we could benefit from an official reply on this.

@sonnyNg can you help us out?

Cheers

OK. Got it @MortenCopenhagen

I thought you were going to post a new idea under the Exchange topic and only seeking opinions here.

@sonnyNg 's reply is awaited then…

Hi @MortenCopenhagen

Here’ a classic case of a small business that is not a permanent structure in the traditional sense:

नमस्कार @TusharSuradkar

तुमच्या “I definitely want to rise up the Level ladder but don’t want to end up spending valuable time writing reviews” या अपेक्षेवर काय करता येईल ते मी सुचविले होते.

Namaskar, @C_T

I have thoroughly read your replies so far in this discussion but wasn’t able to see where you have addressed my query.

I am sorry about this but it could be entirely my fault not to notice your valuable suggestion or the inability to relate that your comment was about my query.

"I definitely want to rise up the Level ladder but don’t want to end up spending valuable time writing reviews that Google does not value much or if such business additions damage my little reputation"

Also, I’d request your attention to the portion in bold of my quote that was left out when you copy-pasted it in your previous reply for reference.

I meant that if a review is such that it is of no consequence or of no use to an end-user of Google Maps “in the opinion of Google”, I’d refrain from posting such reviews since it would be a wastage of time and also show me in a bad light for indulging in posting such reviews of little worth.

I’d be eager to read your suggestion on this or being pointed to your previous reply if you have already posted it.

Once again I apologize for missing your post or for missing the point even after reading it.

BR,

Tushar

OK, got it now after reading through the two messages linked in your reply.

That fellow was asking about how to progress on Google Maps in the times of lockdown.

I can move around freely out here in Delhi where lockdown is lifted but find that I cannot capture much information of roadside shops apart from a distant photo and posting such information will be a futile activity if Google doesn’t value it.

Besides I am also worried about what it will do to my profile full of information that is of little use in my view.

I don’t want to explore other avenues like editing, fact-checking, and translations as I don’t find those interesting.

Hence my remark. What would you advise @C_T ?

BR,

Tushar

Regret my misunderstanding of your statement @TusharSuradkar

However, in my opinion, every bit of information in Maps has to be correct and up to date.
Google has left the majority of that task to the community.

This opinion got further reinforced when I could come out of tricky situations while at the outstation. Had the pin location and contact information in Maps been incorrect, I would have got doomed.
