Mariam’s House or Sunhera Makan, Fatehpur Sikri, UP, India.
The royal palace complex is the most favored place of tourists located in Fatehpur Sikri and a special palace, also known as Maryam Palace or the Golden House, is prominent among them for its unique features.
It was the house of emperor Akbar’s mother, Hamida Banu Begum, who was holding the title of Mariam Makani.
It’s built on a raised platform and can be accessed from all the four directions as it’s surrounded by verandahs in three sides and fourth side through a rectangular entrance which is leading to the hall via a vaulted archway. It’s a two storey structure though seems to be one. It has four rooms as central room which is a rectangular hall and surrounded by verandahs. First floor is having three rooms, visitors don’t have access to the upper floor by the ASI. Narrow staircase which is leading to upper floor is locked. Northern side roof top is decorated with Palanquin type or Chhaparkhat pavilion crowned by two elongated finials.
This palace is also a center of attraction for its paintings. Radha Krishna paintings in the hall are still traceable. Some other Hindu deities were depicted in the niches and on the pillars including carvings on the brackets. These paintings which were painted by natural Colors are almost faded. The depiction of the scenes of fighting elephants, battlefield etc. are worth seeing. An inscription or calligraphic text in Persian language is inscribed on the beams of Northern Veranda. Abundant golden color was used in the interior and exterior decoration of this palace, hence it is also known as Sunhera Makan or Golden Palace and now there are only traces left.
This Palace or house needs a very close observation to trace the paintings marks, which may reveal more interesting elements. It is a purely secular structure, built about four hundred and fifty years ago, which shows the liberal policies of Emperor Akbar and respect for all religions.
