Hot and Spicy Jhal Pitha

This is my third post on Bangladeshi traditional Pitha/cake. You can see my other 2 posts here and here. Today I am going to talk about a common Pitha in Bangladesh. It is normally known as Jhal (hot) Pitha. In some places it called ওট পিঠা, রুট পিঠা, মরিচের পিঠা ইত্যাদি। It is called the Jhal Pitha as pepper and other spices are used to make this Pitha. You can also add beef or mutton to make it more tasty and delicious.

How to prepare:

Making the Jhal Pitha is quite easy but it takes time.

You need below items-

  1. Rice flour/powder
  2. Garlic paste
  3. Onion paste
  4. Turmeric
  5. Chilly Powder or green chilly pieces or paste
  6. Salt
  7. Mustard oil
  8. Ginger paste
  9. Beef curry
  10. Water

Now mix all the spices and rice flour together. Use Chilly and salt as per your taste. Then use hot water to mix the rice powder and spices together. Make a soft paste by mixing everything together. Now pour cooking oil in a frying pan and over the oil pour the mixed paste and close the lid. Keep 15 minutes over the burner. After 15 minutes open the lid and make an upside-down of the Pitha and keep heating for another 15 minutes by closing the lid of the frying pan.

In our village where there is no gas or induction burner/oven, you need banana leaves. Take a pot and lay the banana leaves inside the pot. Then pour the mixed paste over banana leaves inside the pot. After pouring all the paste then put another layer of banana leaf over the paste. Now put the pot over the oven and make fire over banana leaves at the top of the pot. So the cake inside will be heating form both the bottom and topside at the same time. In this way, it will take 3 to 4 hours. The heat of the bottom oven needs to keep a lower medium to make the cake soft inside.

[Frying Jhal Pitha]

After making the Jhal Pitha this way you will get medium-hard skin in top and bottom of the Pitha but very soft and tasty inside. You can keep this Pitha for 3- 4 days in the refrigerator. It will become hard inside the refrigerator but if you fry, it will become soft again.

Thanks a lot for liking the post @Nyainurjanah . Spuces used in this cake are good for health. This is just a traditional snack of Bangladesh which is eaten mainly during winter. Though it can be made at any time of the year.

@user_not_found thank you for your comment.

Thanks for tagging me @MukulR ! This one might just be a bit more for my taste. The other you posted seemed more sweet and would be great as a treat but this one might be great as a side dish too. I hope it’s not too spicy though, because I’m not used to very spicy food.

It depends on you how much spices you will use @MortenSI But garlic, ginger, onion, and other spices are good for health. Cooked meat is also good. So I think this going to be a nice dish for you. The only danger is chilly. Be careful to use it. Not much.

I love garlic @MukulR , it could go on almost any dish if you ask me!

I was more concerned about the chilli too. That’s the dangerous one for me.
