I’m planning to host a meet-up in İstanbul in the following months. Since it’s my first time hosting i’m super excited and also open to any recommendations. Is there a limitation on the topic? I’m planning to host a tech meetup where an expert informs us on developing technologies and it continues as an open discussion. I believe many new ideas to improve Google Maps will come up. Would love to hear ideas of Local Guides who have hosted meet-ups before
Hi @user_not_found
!
I’m very glad to know that you are planning your first meet-up. I’m sure it will be great!
I hosted several meet-ups in the past and you can read about my experience and get some tips in this post.
Also I would like to share with you some extra tips to start. Here we go…
- Define the meet-up objective: The objective of your meet-up, must be related to do something in Google Maps with the assistants. The objective can be for example to add new places or roads to the map, take photos of the places you visit to upload, review different places, etc… I’m not sure if the technical workshop meets this requirement, but I’m sure you can think about it to make it work.
- Check the place and the requirements: Check if the place you are going to visit has any requirement that need to be accomplished by the assistants. It is always good to check if it is accessible for people with different necesities.
- Prepare the meet-up invite: Think about the text and photo you are going to use. You can also prepare a collage using severa photos or graphics. In the invite you must be very clear about the objective of your meet-up, and the requirements for the people that will assist. Important: The photos and text you are going to use must be from your own. You cannot use photos or texts that do not belong to you.
- Sign-up and security: For your own seccurity and for the ones who assist, I suggest not to include the meeting address in the invite. You can prepare a Google Form where people can sign up for the event and after they signed up you can share the address with them. This will assure you will not have bad surprises in your event with people that just want to distub. Important: In your form do not require personal information from the people more that the strictly necessary to contact them.
- The day of the event: When the day of your event arrives, be sure that everyone gets comfortable. Take some minutes of your meet-up to introduce yourself and to explain the others about the objectives. Also give some time to the assistants to introduce themselves.
- Enjoy and be yourself! I think this is the best tip I can give you.
- After the meet-up: prepare a post to publish here in Connect telling the story about your event to all the community. We are very anxious to read about your experience!
If you have any other question please let me know. Good Luck with your first Meet-up!!

Hello @user_not_found
After my first meet-up I wrote a post which you might like to read it’s titled My-First-virtual-meetup-tips-Challenges-and-success . It’s interesting really, please look it up.
Well done and congratulations in advance for hosting or better still planning to host a meet-up.
Have you submitted it for approval here on connect?
There are no limitations as long as its to help improve connect, the maps, local guides community in general.
It could be virtual or physical. I love physical meet-ups because you get to meet local guides in persons and interactions are more cordial and closer. I enjoy that so much and I have organised lots of both.
My first meet-up was a foodie one and also virtual it’s West-African-dishes-virtual-taste-meetup . I have since organised other ones like;
- Building-the-local-guide-community-series-I
- Jabi-Lake-Mall-Photo-Walk-Meet-up-2-Abuja
- Gwarimpa-Dawaki-Map-Edit-meet-up-2021 etc
Feel free to check on profile and scroll on for the meet-ups. Enjoy your meet-up and kindly share the recap with us when its all done. Wish you success.
Cheers
Thank you soo much
