Hey all! I’ve been a Local Guide for eons, but I’ve never attended a meet-up because I’m based in an extremely rural part of the United States. (As in, there are places out here with more cows than people. Truly. I’ve done the math.) I’m a big small biz advocate, though, and I can see the potential of arranging one. Has anyone else successfully hosted a meet-up in a really rural area? (Bonus points if it was in my part of the world: the Dakotas, Wyoming, and Montana.) Any pointers you’d be willing to share?

Hi! I am following along because I am curious too. Although we are 90 miles from Chicago the area we are in is extremely rural and the amount of time driving to Chicago (depending on the time and day) can 90 minutes or 6 hours. We just surpassed the number of people exceeding the number of cows in the area I grew up in so I get it!

Cool! Whereabouts outside of Chicago? I’ve done some work in the northwest part of the state: Dixon, Fulton, Rochelle, Polo, Sterling, Mount Carroll… that general area. It’s really pretty out there in the summertime. I’m a big fan of White Pines and Starved Rock State Parks.

Not a thing! I haven’t heard from anyone else who’s done a meetup in the middle of nowhere. It looks like you’re up in Montana, maybe? Not too far from my neck of the woods. Are you working on putting something together up there?

I have been TRYING AND TRYING.
My BEST hope is this year - I work for a local arts festival (Sweet Pea Festival) and I am desperately hoping to coordinate a meetup during the week of the festival. We have so many big acts and art and music… maybe it will draw a crowd. It would be the first week of August.

In fact, I intend to be! Nearby, anyway: I’ll be in Gardiner/Mammoth for the first week of August to kick around Yellowstone for a bit (and escape the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally here at home). I’ve got a backcountry campsite and a date with Electric Peak on the 5th and 6th, but I bet I could swing up to Bozeman on Saturday!
