Nattō is a particular Japanese food made of fermented beans. The smell of these beans is strong and some Westerners compare it to that of some kinds of cheese. It’s not a dish for everyone’s taste. I have honestly enjoyed it. These are hosomaki with Nattō.

Hello @user_not_found
Welcome you are already Japanese! This is like the final exam of your being Japanese😆. In China and Taiwan, tofu has a worse smell than natto. I can not overcome it yet🤢.
@YasumiKikuchi oh have still to try tofu in China as I will go there this year. To be honest Tofu bought in Chinese supermarkets or eaten when doing hotpot (the Chinese version of shabu shabu) didn’t seem so much smelly, but of course I have to try it in China.
Oh well… to be honest I have really enjoyed Nattō! In Italy we have various smelly cheeses (even much more smelly than Nattō) and still many people cannot enjoy Nattō despite eating these cheeses. For me it’s quite opposite: Nattō is delicious! And at the same time well… I don’t like all the smelly cheeses we have in our country!
@YasumiKikuchi And finally, have tried the famous smelly tofu in Chinese streets. Yeah, smell is strong, but taste is divine. Especially if very spicy!
Hello @user_not_found
,
Thank you for sharing this photo with us, the sushi looks very interesting.
In general, I love sushi, but never tried them with beans! It sounds a bit weird and uncommon to me, at least very different from the sushi that we have in Bulgaria. I guess, sushi, like many other kind of food, sometimes gets adapted to the local taste, and hence unfortunately loses some of its authenticity.
@BorrisS every cuisine gets adapted to local tastes, no exception for Japanese and for Chinese (even if also authentic restaurants exist for both). This kind of sushi is surely one of the most authentic you can find, but these are not only just beans, but fermented beans. Taste gets completely different than normal beans and it is something not everyone is ready to try. But if you like it (and I really liked it), yeah, it’s something truly Japanese.
