As the gift-wrapping and home and work decoration time is almost about to be over an average Canadian is preparing to add 50 kg garbage to landfill.
According to Zero Waste Canada, The Vancouver-based advocacy group country is responsible for producing 100,000-elephant-weight of garbage over the holidays season. That enlists 540,000 tonnes of wrapping paper and gift bags, 3,000 tonnes of foil, 2.6 billion Christmas cards and six millions rolls of tape.
Already noted as a world leader in producing garbage in regular days Canadians add 25 per cent more than the rest of the year in holidays aeason. According to Statistics Canada (2014) more than 25 million tonnes of waste ended up in Canadian landfills. The best environmental friendly garbage producing record belongs to Japan and they do half what we Canadians treat as garbage.
Recycling looks an attractive solution to this wasteful traditional behaviour. Canadians prefer glamour and so go for gift bags, tape, ribbon, glittering and velvet or foil gift wrapping paper that can not be recycled.
While some prefer to repeatedly use plastic Christmas trees year after year Canada is also chopping down 6 million farmed or native pine and fir Christmas trees
