History does repeat itself doesn't it!

In my post From a Palace of Industry to a place for Dog and Cat Lovers, I posted some photos and told the story behind this building, I described its use over it’s 140-year history. It started its life hosting the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880–81 then in mid 1901 it was the venue for the opening of the first Parliament of Australia and then, for some 25 years up until 1927, it was the venue for the Victorian Parliament. I also briefly mentioned that in 1919 it became an emergency hospital for the influenza epidemic that was sweeping the world and which became known as the Spanish Flu. More than just a makeshift hospital, it was also used as morgue during the 1919 pandemic. History does repeat itself doesn’t it! Today, just over a 100 years later, this building, the Royal Exhibition Building and one of Melbourne’s most iconic buildings, set in the beautiful Carlton Gardens, a historic Victorian-era park with museum and theatre, playground, open sports grounds including basketball and tennis courts, is being used as a vaccination centre, a place to vaccinate Melbournians against the COVID-19 pandemic and thus once again, part of the response to a global health crisis. My hope is that this repeating history stops there and I shudder to think that this beautiful place could become more than just a vaccination centre!

Brief COVID-19 history: It first appeared in China on November 17, 2019, and according to the World Health Organization, within a year it infected more than 75 million people and led to more than 1.6 million deaths worldwide and by 18 August 2021, there have been 208+ million confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 4+ million deaths!

Wishing that you all stay safe and well

I think history is like a loop, always repeating itself @AdamGT no matters what.

Besides my thoughts I hope everything gets better soon for all of you in Australia.

Greetings.

Yes indeed it is a beautiful place @iorikun301 rich in Victorian and in fact, Australian history. As well as the majestic building itself, and it really is a spectacular building both inside and out, it’s set in a beautiful park/garden.

Thank you @SilvyC , and yes I too hope things get better sooner rather than later as this viral enemy is causing death and havoc all over the world. The scale of the challenge seems overwhelming and I can’t imagine where our world would be if it were not for the vaccines. Yes history is like a loop, and while 100 years ago it was used as a hospital for the Spanish Flu, I just hope that history doesn’t repeat and the beautiful Royal Exhibition Building was becomes a morgue!

Thank you for your beautiful words @CAAG1959 . Yes like historical plagues and pandemics such as malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy, influenza, smallpox, the Black Death which was responsible for the death of one-third of the world population, Cholera, the Spanish Flu, we now have COVID-19, a scourge on mankind.

Hello @AdamGT !
What is the situation in Australia now? What percentage of the population is vaccinated? Are anti-epidemic measures observed?
I’m curious because Australia is setting an example.
Otherwise, history really repeats itself, and every hundred years other terrible things happen … besides infectious diseases.

Best Regards!

Hi @mockata2

Well here in Melbourne, the city I believe that has had the longest, if not one of the longest lockdowns anywhere in the world, we’re finally out of lockdown are are relatively free to get on with our lives. We need to show our vaccination certificate to enter most establishments and have to wear masks in certain places including public transport. Again here 94% have had their first dose and 92% fully vaccinated which is pretty good really! Still around 1000 COVID cases being acquired but deaths are relatively low , 11 deaths in last 24 hours. I’m not totally sure about the country wide stats but I believe that around 78% of the 12+ population are fully vaccinated, again not too bad.

So how is it in Bulgaria?

From what I know I thought that Singapore was the place that is setting the best example, but again I could easily be wrong there!

Well done Australia! That is why our media gives you an example.

In Bulgaria the situation is completely different from you.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Bulgaria has not been completely closed, only last year they set up several checkpoints at the exits of the cities for a month and removed them.

In 24 hours, 27,672 diagnostic tests were performed - 5,071 PCR and 22,601 antigenic. More than 100,000 active cases remain. The country’s hospitals treat 6,225 people with C-19. 702 patients are accommodated in the intensive care units. In the last 24 hours, the disease took the lives of 114 people, 3344 were cured in a population of less than 6 million. souls.

Vaccinated in Bulgaria are about 20-21%, this is because people do not trust the ruling politicians and mostly do not believe in this vaccine. Bulgaria has gone through a difficult transition from the communist regime from 1989 until today and remains the country with the highest level of corruption in the entire European Union.
There are restrictions here, as everywhere, but most people don’t follow them because they don’t trust politicians or the media or the virus, they don’t trust anyone.

Otherwise, life is going well - everyone goes to work, to restaurants, cinemas, discos, malls, there are people everywhere, some with a real certificate and some with a fake. Here you enter everywhere with someone else’s green certificate, the inspectors at the entrance of the malls do not look at the name and do not look for an ID card, only the expiration date.
In Bulgaria, if no one watches TV, it will not be understood that there is a pandemic.

This is the situation here in Bulgaria @AdamGT

I would be interested to know what the situation is in your countries with regard to C-19 @CAAG1959 , @SilvyC , @iorikun301

More than 100,000 active cases remain and only 20-21% vaccinated :sob:

That all sounds very grim @mockata2 . I was actually traveling overseas in early 2020 when this COIVD broke out and I rushed home thinking I would be better off at home but then we went into this long lockdown something like over 250 days and the TV was driving us crazy because it was COVID 24/7. It was COVID news on steroids here.

A few years back I had planned to visit Bulgaria but unfortunately I overstayed my time in nearby Romania. But now, until the world settles down, travel is very much limited. I do wish it improves there for you, and the sooner the better.

Thanks @AdamGT ! I also hope that the situation will improve, but as it turns out, this will not happen in the next few years. New strains are constantly coming out and they will appear until the population of the earth is 100% vaccinated, and I think this is a very long and difficult process and it will take many years (and there are many people who resist).
For now, the entire population of the earth is fully vaccinated with two doses and is 3 333 599 017 which makes 42.9% to 100% in my opinion will take time at least until 2025. Until then it will continue in the same way as before opening -closing, masks, green pass …

Otherwise, I really wanted to visit Australia, because I know from my Bulgarian acquaintances who live and work there and have told me that it is a beautiful and free country.

It does look grim @mockata2 , especially now that we have yet another new strain of this virus, Omicron, leading to growing concerns around the world, it’s already in 30 countries, including here. So, like you, I do hope the situation regarding vaccination, improves globally. Stay safe and I do hope that you will one day visit the beautiful land down under.

hehee… thanks for tagging me, @.mockata2

Aquí, por suerte ya hemos recibido al tercer dosis, pero a su ves tenemos muchos restricciones en disintas actidades, los casos de contagios están estables y espero que al temporada no traigan .más casos
