Historical landmarks , Towers & Spires.

While the monthly #TopicforJuly is onging. I have been taking pictures of Museums , Cathedrals and Historical landmarks .

Then , I come to realise what make all these structures so unique are their spires and towers.

The skyline of many old cities around the world are dominated by these beautiful intrinsically design spires and towers.

Here are few among my collections and I hope you like them.

The building in the picture is Westertoren and which was built between 1620 and 1631 . It was designed by Architect hendrick .It is a reformed church within the Dutch Protestant Calvinism.

The Tower above in the picture is called Montelbaanstoren , it is a tower on the bank of the Qudeschans, Amsterdam canal . According to Wikipedia , the original tower was built in 1516 as part of the Walls of Amsterdam for the purpose of defending the city and the harbour.

Zuiderkerk is now a community center. It was once a 17th century Protestant church in Nieuwmarkt area of Amsterdam. The church now turned community center played an important part in the life of Rembrandt and was the subject of a paint by Claude Monet

Munttoren is another tower in Amsterdam , It stands on the busy Muntplein square , where the Amstel River and the Singel canal meet.

I came across this beautiful tower on my walk back from unsuccessful visit to Vincent van Gogh museum .

De Krijtberg with its beautiful spires remain Catholic church .The church is dedicated to St Francis Xavier and is one of the rectorates within the Roman Catholic parish of St Nicholas and it is recognised by its two pointed spires.

Great photos @Emmik20 and yes these landmarks, towers and spires are everywhere and like you have said, the skyline of many old cities around the world are dominated by them and the new modern cities by modern architecture and overshadowing skyscrapers. I like you am still drawn to the historical ones

Hello again @Emmik20 thank you for this third themed view of Amsterdam. I hope you are still enjoying the city, the culture and the people. You even showed me a place I did not see myself (De Krijtberg).

Here is the Montelbaanstoren seen from the canal.

Hi @Emmik20

I love spires also. I have thought about how we can use Google Maps to inspire citizens and guests to spot and enjoy them more. Making lists is an obvious option, but they need quite a bit of marketing on other channels.

I have made a list of spires you can climb in Copenhagen. You can find it here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/E6DyxBDUZKDoCLAu6

If spires could have their own category on Google Maps it would be easier for people to find them.

Or maybe we could collaborate and find the perfect hash tag for such lists across cities. And maybe Googke would care to feature such lists.

What do you think?

Cheers

Morten

PS I have similar thoughts about sculptures and statues.

Thank you @MortenCopenhagen for the list of spires in Copenhagen. That is really a good idea for a list. If you don’t mind I will ‘borrow’ you idea and make a list for the Netherlands.

Hi @Erik_van_den_Ham

By all means. Please do.

I share ideas with the hope that others would care to try them out.

Please let us know if you succeed and share a link.

Hi @AdamGT Thanks for the comment . The old buildings are very beautiful and they are in many cities. I believe the are still relevant in modern architecture. It is also remind me of Russian orthodox cathedral. The architecture remain the usual Slavic design with a onion Dom . Even latest cathedral just commission by the president .

Hi @Erik_van_den_Ham the Towers and the Spires are too beautiful to be ignored. I can see that there are hundreds of them in the city.

It is good idea if you can create a list of them.

Hi @Emmik20 ,

I love the topic you’ve started and love that there are so many other Local Guides who like towers and spires (because I do, too!). I’ve saved all the places you mentioned in your post to my list of “Want to go” places on Google Maps, and I can’t wait to explore them one day!

Which one is your favorite? Have you explored towers and spires in other countries, too?

I was about to share a photo of the unique spire of the Church of Our Saviour in Copenhagen, when I saw that @MortenCopenhagen already shared it in his list. What sets this spire apart from others is the staircase that winds around it from the outside. It’s a bit scary to climb it on a windy day! @MortenCopenhagen , have you been up there?

Here’s a photo of the spire of the Matthias Church in Budapest, which is just breathtaking with its delicate ornaments:

Hello @MortenCopenhagen Thanks for the comment. I have just checked the link. The places on the list are interesting and worth visiting. You 've done a great job at creating it.

Making a comprehensive list and getting Google to feature it, is a quick way to inspire people to come for visit .

It’s good to collaborate on creating the list about spires and towers but

I will soon leave Amsterdam and return to Russia , where I live and again back to work possibly in a remote location somewhere in the world.

Hi @DeniGu

Sure, I have been up there and I can confirm it is scary. Also because the railing is not taller than you can easily fall down! It was renovated a few years back and I believe they increased the safety also.

Oh wow, @MortenCopenhagen , the railings used to be that low? I visited back in 2018, and I remember having the railing up to my shoulder. I can only imagine how much scarier it must have been!

Hello @DeniGu . Thanks for the comment .Just check Church of our Savior on Google map. Its very impressive and I can see the staircase wrap around the spire . This is what interest me.

I will advise you create a topic on spires and towers with @Morten Copenhagen.

I will be considering going on Euro Tour . There

are many beautiful places to visit,

Like going to see a staircase on a spire at Church of our Saviour , it is just amazing that such building exist.

I remember the height of the railing to be between knee and hip height only. But it’s maybe 30 years ago.

Happy that is was improved.

I took a look at your new list, @Erik_van_den_Ham .

That was quick. I might have some OCD tendencies since I like to find and share odd and structured info on my lists like year of when it was build or how high up you can get in the spirs.

Also, it seems that some of your places are in need of better pics.

All the best

Morten

I think @MortenCopenhagen I share that same OCD tendency with you and I will add that specific info.
I will try to add some better pictures to some of the locations (although that will take me some more time than just creating the list :joy: ).
