Chew Jetty is actually a whole village built on stilts by some Chinese immigrants in Malaysia. It comprises of row houses on stilts joined by wooden walkways over the water. A perfect place to walk through a history of hundred years.

Chinese people left their motherland because of widespread poverty and reached Penang in search of new lives. They were able to find jobs as stevedores and cross - channel ferry boatman in the bustling port of Penang to stake their survival in the new land.

Chew Jetty consists of 75 elevated houses, several Chinese temples, a community hall and lots of tourist facilities, all linked by elevated wooden walkways. It’s a fun place to wander around admiring docked fishing boats while the scent of frying fish wafts across the walkways. There are numerous places to browse souvenirs and nibble snack food.

The best time of the day to visit the Chew Jetty is in the early morning or in evening. In morning, you can witness the local Chinese Clan People practice their daily morning rituals, ranging from preparing food to praying at the temple at the main entrance.

Located straight down from Lebuh Chulia – the Chew Jetty is the most tourist-friendly with the most stilt-houses, the longest walkway and plenty of places for those Kodak moments.

If you are reach in afternoon and wondering when or where to click, then wait till sunset. Fun fact: to this day none of the families pay any tax to the government as they are not living on land.
