Hindola Gate or Badal Gate, Gwalior Fort, MP, India

It is said that this gate was named after Badal Singh, uncle of Raja Man Singh. The name “Hindola Pol” is also used for this entrance. This huge gate is located near Gujari Mahal.

As it was an impenetrable hill fort, the security gates were also very strong and grand. It is built on a magnificent toothed arches and decorated with flowers or symbols of Rajputana or Hindu style. It is not easy to describe the architectural features of this gate.

This gate is a beautiful example of Rajput architecture. On both sides of the gate are domed chhatriyan based on stone arches, decorated chhajjas, hanging windows supported by brackets tops are adorned with ornamented cupolas. Like Fatehpur Sikri, traces of use of blue tiles are also visible. The outer surfaces of this grand gate are covered with brown stones. During the reign of Emperor Shahjahan it was renovated or rebuilt by than the governor Syed Alam and it was renamed as Shahjahan Gate.
