The treacherous route of what is known as Sani Pass - the only access road between KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho - which climbs over 1300 metres in just nine kilometres, is not for the faint hearted.
4x4 in low range, and you’re off to a good start. However, eventually making it up Sani Pass would’ve been woefully incomplete without making a quick stop at Africa’s Highest Pub.
The Pub is the first thing you see even before you get to the border post! And the gale-force, icy cold
wind pushed us straight into the pub – we had no choice but to go inside.
Situated 2874 metres above sea-level; the tiny, quaint pub can barely hold a football team but it’s
definitely the most bustling part of Lesotho!
Packed with tourists from all over the world who have all just traversed up the same path we just
did, everyone had a beer in their hand…
Their local beer is called Maluti which, co-indecently, is the same name as Lesotho’s currency. They
have their priorities right.
Looking out of the window, we could see the treacherous road that we just drove up on and finally
grasped the magnitude of just how high up we were.
Looking around - still not a tree in sight - instead there are fields of snow… Or is this the Maluti
making me see things?
