Hi, my name is Chris and I live in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town - the Mother City of South Africa. I love travelling and sharing videos and photos of the places I visit as it might inform future travellers of places that are unknown to them. I am also a railroad enthusiast and was the founder of an international FaceBook group called HookedOnTrains (https://www.facebook.com/groups/HookedOnTrains/) with 10K members. I perform volunteer work as Coach Controller on a local heritage steam train operated by the Ceres Rail Company. We do regular trips from Cape Town to Elgin every Saturday, as well as a number of other special trips throughout the year. The train consists of doubleheader steam locos, traditional wooden Sleeper Cars with compartments as well as Lounge Cars, a Dining Car, Bar Car and an Observation Car. Today, I would like to share a movie of one of these trips to Elgin to give you some idea of what this is all about. The train leaves from the Cape Town Waterfront at 8 AM to arrive at Elgin at around 11 AM. Departure for the return to Cape Town is at 15:30 PM to arrive in Cape Town at 17:30 PM. The scenic route takes the train over the Boland mountains through Sir Lowrey’s Pass with breathtaking views of the Cape Peninsula and False Bay. At Elgin, passengers disembark to visit the Elgin Railway Market which offers a variety of fresh produce, light meals, estate wines, draft beer, delicatessen and gifts. There is normally live music and a festive atmosphere. It’s a very relaxing trip and due to popularity, normally booked out one to two months ahead. See more at http://www.ceresrail.co.za/booktrip/.
