The Jami Masjid is one the most imposing monuments of Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park.

The Jami Masjid

Located outside the royal enclosure at Champaner this colossal mosque is architecturally classified as one of the finest mosques of Gujarat.it exemplifies a perfect blend of Indo islamic architectural style.

The mosque (66 x 55m) is raised on a high plinth which can be accessed through three imposing porches on north, south and east. The last one is most remarkable for its intricate carving and perforated stone screen work. The open courtyard of the mosque is surrounded on three sides by covered cloisters of one aisle deep. The prayer hall has five pointed archways with the central one being the highest and flanked by two slender minarets. The prayer hall has additional smaller minarets at its four corners.Central dome is elevated on clerestory allowing natural light and ventilation inside the mosque its intrados are filled by ribbed stone slabs of great beauty. There are seven mihrabs at the west wall of the main prayer hall.At of the top of the central mihrab was fixed an inscribed tablet, now lost informing date of Completion of the mosque in 1508-09 the northern section of the prayer hall is separated by a perforated screen with separate entrance reserved for royal ladies, Balconied windows of typical Gujarat variety relieve the plain lake of the facade and side walls.
