It all started when I took a photo of an old boat in Port Adelaide, South Australia, and because I had my data switched on Google Maps asked me if I wanted to share the photo. Why not? Next minute, I’m being provided with opportunities to share my experiences and suggestions with the world around me with the ‘contribute’ function on Google Maps.
A bit apprehensive at first, I soon sunk my teeth into providing information about the places I go. I answered questions and reviewed businesses. Best of all, I get to help small businesses and little-known places get more exposure on Google Maps.
My job has me travelling right across South Australia and I get to go to places a lot of people ordinarily wouldn’t. I visit little towns and big towns, national parks and town parks. I like the idea of helping put these places on the map and to encourage people to stop and spend a bit of time there rather than fuel up and continue on. Sometimes these little places hide some big treasures (and good chai lattes).
I’m in the early stages of being a Google Local Guide so there’s certainly way more I’d like to contribute. However, I have plenty of kilometres in front of me to be able to do that!
