What does the Local Guides program mean to you?
Have you ever heard the expression “Helping others is helping yourself?” Well, it is true!
When I was in my early twenties, I went on a trip to Europe. I stayed at a hostel and met many travelers from all over the world. Every night, we gathered at the lounge to drink beers and talk about our trips. We were very excited about being exposed to new places, people, and cultures and I felt I was becoming a better-rounded global citizen. Also, we shared information on attractions, photo spots, tickets, restaurants and so on. Everyone was so happy to talk about their useful travel tips. Sharing my travel tips without expecting anything in return was a great pleasure for me, too.
Years passed, now I have a smart phone to carry around wherever I go. I use Google Maps to find a location and write reviews about places to pass on what I have learned whilst travelling not only Korea but the globe. It is exciting that I can reach more people I can help. It is thrilling that I have more honest relationships and interactions with people. For example, I left a review on a noodle restaurant saying that the spicy cold noodle tastes excellent, but the broth that comes with had too much black pepper which left me a burning sensation in my throat. The restaurant owner replied back to me, saying that thank you for the review and they will check their recipe and process of making food.
The Local Guides program has enabled me to reach more friends around the world and connect me with a wider community. More importantly, helping people through the program makes me feel better about myself and makes me what I am worth as an individual. I truly believe that “Helping others is helping yourself.”
